This contribute offers an analysis of the problematic that emerges during the translation of a literary text from one language to another when the source text is characterized by the presence, together with the language in which the text is written, of a network of languages that might be of a different nature. The superimposition of languages represents a challenge for the translator when he transfers the text into the target language, especially if the languages involved are dialects or idiolects used by the author for a specific purpose. We will discuss this aspect through the analysis of the Arabic translation produced by the Egyptian translator Moheb Saad Ibrahim of the Italian novel “Il Fu Mattia Pascal” by Luigi Pirandello. This study, based on the method of the French theorist Antoine Berman (Berman, 1995 pp. 64-73), allows us to discuss how the translator deals with the four Italian dialects of the source text, considering that each of the them was used by the author with a specific function. We get to the conclusion that transferring the dialects from one language to another is mostly impossible because they are closely related to the context they belong to.
