The ancient and modern critics disputed the reception and interpretation of this poetic verse. Therefore, most of those studying Abu Tammam's poetry and explained his poetry have stopped, which were approved by critics within the framework of the theory of the column of Arab poetry. In the intellectual reference to which this poetic image belongs to the distinguished poetic image of "Jahmiyya of descriptions", is linked to a rhetorical doctrine of the Jahmiyya or Al-Mu'atla, which revealed the culture of Abu Tammam, and his ability to adapt this culture in his poetic experience .Where it stopped when critics received this verse in the critical movement spaces that were set up around Abu Tammam's poetry, such as; Al-Khatib al-Tabrizi, al-Marzouqi, al-Amidi, Ibn al-Mustaufi al-Erbili, Abu Hilal al-Askari, al-Marsafi, Shawqi Dhaif, and other critics who studied and analyzed this verse. The study showed that this verse was studied in the light numbers of critical ideas and orientation, so it was at first an example of illusion, secondly for innovation, thirdly for difference, fourth for strangeness, and fifthly as a reflection of one of the forms of Abu Tammam’s psychological contract. However, the close look at this paper reveals that there are some new things that the researcher is interested in highlighting in this article. To clarify positions in the Holy Quran. And that some contemporary writers do not take into account the status of these signs and interesting situation in the appropriate places, but they refuse to take into account behind their appearance when writing Arabic became randomly writing, Based on the above, the researcher can shed light on the importance of these punctuation marks and indicate the relationship between them and the signs of the Qur`anic cessation, which does not mean the use of the first place with The existence of the connection and kinship between them; because the writing of Qur`an is descriptive, it could never be treated in the places of cessation and tone as usual treatment of the normal writing.
The phenomenon of context has garnered significant attention from numerous scholars across various scientific and doctrinal orientations. It has contributed to elucidating the meaning contained in any discourse, whether linguistic, literary, or legal. This study is situated within the field of pragmatics, one of the contemporary linguistic approaches that focuses on directing meaning in linguistic texts, taking into account the speaker and the context. While syntax examines the relationship between signs, and semantics explores the relationship between signs and their references, pragmatics investigates the relationship between signs and their users. Therefore, pragmatic research must study the relationship between speech, text, and its situational context. In this research, we are particularly interested in the pragmatic context, also known as the situational context. The research falls within this framework, addressing the situational context—a pragmatic approach—that still raises some questions we aim to clarify according to linguistic scholars. This is followed by a terminological reading of the opinions expressed on the subject to elucidate the term. The elements of the pragmatic context are then defined according to scholars’ classifications, highlighting its role in determining and controlling the meaning of discourse. Subsequently, this is applied to a story from Al-Jahiz’s “The Misers” to demonstrate the pragmatic capability that context brings to the coherence of discourse.
This study seeks to investigate the formation of the rhetorical image of the poem of Abi Al-Baqa Al-Randi, who is considered one of the most reconciled poets of Andalusia in its late ages. Understanding the structure mainly relies on these connections and their interaction with the structures imposed by the context. The aim of this research is to highlight this aspect, which is of great importance in the language used. The methodology adopted is a functional approach within a descriptive framework, taking into account statistical inference. What I have found from this study is that each context has its own color and its unique interaction with these connections by employing them according to its structures, which allows these connections to highlight meanings that vary with the diversity of structures and renew as they change. The primary English versions of the selected news pieces from prominent English-language newspapers are examined to discern the metaphoric expressions present within the narratives. The corresponding translations of the identified metaphoric expressions are also chosen and compared with their original English counterparts. The comparative examination explores the manner in which metaphors are rendered and adapted within the Arabic linguistic framework, taking into account the cultural and linguistic subtleties that may impact the translation procedure. The various forms of equivalence utilized by the translator are emphasized. It has been determined that the strategy of literal translation is prevalent, with ideational and functional equivalence strategies also being employed. Notably, the omission strategy is conspicuous, that may be attributed to the ideological stance of the translator.
Mouzughi, Huda Ethelb, Hamza Copyright (c) 2024 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2024-12-01 2024-12-01 1 30 10.56592/flj.v1i30.1450 Libyan EFL MA Students’ Paraphrasing Skills: Perceptions, Challenges, and Techniques https://uot.edu.ly/journals/index.php/flj/article/view/1451
This study examines the perceptions of Libyan EFL Masters’ students towards the strategy of paraphrasing in academic writing. It sheds light, particularly on the obstacles that students face during the paraphrasing process. Moreover, it explores the most frequent paraphrasing techniques implemented by students. The study involves 30 Libyan MA students studying in the Department of English. The research comprises a questionnaire to ascertain students’ challenges and perceptions of paraphrasing. It also includes a paraphrasing test in order to uncover the common paraphrasing techniques employed by students. The study discloses three main challenges: 1) unfamiliarity of vocabulary skills 2) deficient reading comprehension skills, and 3) changing the main ideas of the original text. Moreover, the results of the paraphrasing test reveal that the synonym-changing technique is dominantly used by all the participants. The study finally suggests that there is a discrepancy between the students’ perceptions of paraphrasing and their use of paraphrasing techniques.
Al-Shredi, Nisreen Copyright (c) 2024 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2024-12-01 2024-12-01 1 30 10.56592/flj.v1i30.1451 Exploring Cross-Linguistic Transfer in Writing Proficiency: The Influence of Arabic (L1) on English (L2) Among Libyan University Students https://uot.edu.ly/journals/index.php/flj/article/view/1452
writing proficiency among Libyan EFL university students. Defoe is among the Western imperialist writers whose colonial discourse enhances ideologies of the superiority of the Western race, religion and power. Defoë’s Robinson Crusoe asserts the “backwardness” of the “Other” as “savage”, brute and uncivilized through the image of “Friday”. The novel has also venerated Christianity to enlighten the “Other” who cast away from European civilization and modernity. While there is a significant amount of experimental research regarding WCF, studies that explore the use and perception of WCF in naturalistic classroom settings have been relatively fewer. This review thus attempts to fill this gap by synthesising empirical findings from naturalistic WCF studies within the past decade covering the period from 2010 to 2023 and offering a critical analysis of their implications for pedagogy and research. Four main themes cut across the data: (1) teacher WCF practices, (2) L2 learners’ responses and engagement with WCF, (3) teachers and students’ beliefs and perceptions, and (4) WCF-related motivation and emotions. The present review outlines the main similarities and differences between these themes, adding to the development of WCF practices. The findings suggest that understanding contextual and learner-specific factors can enhance WCF effectiveness. The review concludes with recommendations for future research, focusing on the complex interaction of contextual variables, learner attributes, and WCF outcomes within the L2 writing classroom.
The lockdown has served to exacerbate the social and digital divide, which is further compounded by linguistic inequalities. While some individuals possess the requisite tools and skills to adapt to new communication modes, others are marginalised. The pandemic has underscored the significance of multilingual and digital competence, with superstitious behaviours frequently reflecting a lack of understanding of official information. While material solidarity is evident, it may prove insufficient in the long term.
