Overview

This course introduces the concept of special education, and to define the various categories of disability (mental, visual, emotional, auditory, physical, learning difficulties, speech and speech problems), and those identified as gifted or exceptional. The course looks into the historical development of raising abnormal children, and determines key causes of disability, how to diagnose and classify it, and the relevant programs and services provided.

Intended learning outcomes

By the end of the course, the students will be able to:

1. Be familiar with educational programs in special education

2. Identify the target groups in special education programs and how to benefit from such programs

3. Distinguish how early intervention programs can be used to reduce disability

4. Enumerate key programs in preparing special education teachers

5. Discover special education and regular programs at schools through group work

6. Analyze problems facing one of the categories of special education

7. Propose programs that contribute to developing the abilities of disabled persons

8. Discuss target groups in special education programs through research

9. Use special education programs to develop the abilities of people with special needs

10. Perform tasks and duties of a teacher for special needs

11. Apply early intervention programs to deal with difficulties faced by people with special needs

12. Apply and evaluate various programs and activities suitable for physical, sensory and mental disabilities
