Overview

This course includes the historical development of the concept of mental disability, its medical, psychological, and social definitions, in addition to causes and methods of prevention. The course also includes methods of measurement and diagnosis of mental disability, its characteristics, the needs of the mentally handicapped, the problems associated with the phenomenon of mental disability, programmes and the reality of special education services for the mentally handicapped.

Intended learning outcomes

By the end of the course, the students should be able to:

1. Learn the characteristics, manifestations, and causes of mental disability.

2. Explain the steps of designing educational programmes for the mentally disabled.

3. List the classifications of mental disabilities.

4. Compare social and educational integration strategies for the mentally disabled.

5. Explain how to develop life skills for the mentally handicapped.

6. Distinguish strategies for diagnosing mentally handicapped cases.

7. Learn the ways and means of guiding and counselling the mentally disabled

8. Propose a programme to develop life skills for the mentally handicapped

9. Compare the types of mental disabilities.

10. Distinguish between types of mental disabilities.

11. Suggest ways and means of preventing mental disability.

12. Discusses how to develop the life skills of the mentally handicapped.

13. Explains strategies for diagnosing mentally handicapped cases.

14. Diagnose mental disability according to different methods of diagnosis.

15. Diagnose mental disability according to different methods and methods of diagnosis.

16. Perform basic skills in the care and education of the mentally handicapped.

17. Practice counselling skills for the families of the mentally handicapped, and for the handicapped persons themselves.

18. Demonstrate how to develop life skills for the mentally handicapped.

19. Apply strategies for diagnosing mentally handicapped cases.

20. Use methods and means for guiding and counselling the mentally disabled.

21. Demonstrate independent learning and continuous development.

22. Communicate orally and in writing.
