Overview

This course aims at defining physical education, physical disability, and its types and causes. It also aims to highlight the role of physical education in the development of children with special needs, and the development of cognitive concepts related to the practice of physical activity. The course familiarizes with ways of developing physical fitness related to health and physical activity, and how to develop large and small muscles and motor synergy. The difference between special physical education and general physical education will also be addressed.

Intended learning outcomes

By the end of the course, the students should be able to:

1. Explain the role of physical education in integrating disabled persons into society.

2. Recognize the basic skills of exercising, and how to teach them.

3. Describe the history of exercising and the development of their practice through the ages.

4. Explain how to set up an appropriate individual educational program for people with disabilities.

5. Enumerate the importance of physical education for people with disabilities.

6. Compare physical activities suitable for the abilities of disabled people.

7. Analyse the problem of some physical activities, and the ability to modify them to suit the abilities of the disabled.

8. Infer the positive consequences of performing physical activities on the mind-set of people with disabilities.

9. Propose an individualized educational programme for disabled students.

10. Analyse, evaluate, and apply appropriate educational strategies for different disabilities.

11. Design physical activities to suit people with disabilities.

12. Distinguish between types of disabilities, and how to deal with them.

13. Implement an individualized educational program suitable for a student with a disability.

14. Behave in a professional manner in front of colleagues and in general.

15. Evaluate and employ knowledge in the design of sports activities appropriate for the types and severity of various disabilities.

16. Develop acceptance of opinion of their colleagues during class participation and presentation of research or assignments.

17. Modify physical activities to suit people with different disabilities.

18. Use modern technologies in presenting lesson content.

19. Develop the ability to assign roles and create a spirit of team cooperation.

20. Acquiring the skills of organizing and managing classroom learning.

  • · Field visits to schools and special education centres; identifying physical activities to practice.
