Overview

This course aims to acquaint the students with the principles and development of special education for early childhood. The course also assesses the developmental processes in early childhood, how to reduce the impact of disability, the role of family interactions in early intervention and to realize the relationship between education and early intervention, and between health care and preventive guidance methods. It also identifies methods for detecting vulnerable children, ways of preventing disabilities in early childhood, and important psychological and social services available.

Intended learning outcomes

By the end of the course, the students should be able to:

1. Appreciate and understand the concept of early intervention.

2. Identify early intervention services, models, and programmes.

3. Explain the methods and programmes appropriate for early detection of disability.

4. Gain knowledge of the most important ways to prevent disability, such as genetic tests, and identify risk factors.

5. The student should distinguish between cognitive skills and motor skills.

6. Contrast self-care skills with sensory development.

7. Itemize special considerations in the education of young disabled children.

8. Infer early intervention detection methods.

9. Classify early intervention services, models, and programmes.

10. Propose and evaluate key programmes for early intervention.

11. Discover effective ways to prevent disability, e.g. genetic tests, and identify risk factors.

12. The student analyses perceptual and motor skills.

13. Demonstrate self-care skills and sensory development.

14. Explain key special considerations in the education of young disabled children.
