After obtaining his Ph.D. from Newcastle University in the United Kingdom in 1996, he returned to the university to hold several academic positions, progressing from lecturer to assistant professor, then associate professor, and finally full professor since 2015.Before fully joining academia, his career was distinguished by combining academic expertise with practical contributions in the engineering field, where he worked on transferring and applying knowledge in real industrial contexts.

Dr. Salem's scientific research is concentrated in applied fields that serve the industrial sector, especially in the areas of:
- Material corrosion and protection methods.
- Welding metallurgy.
- The mechanical and physical behavior of materials.
