 ABSTRACT

The short story "A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner presents profound psychological complexities of the protagonist, Miss Emily Grierson. Her idiosyncratic conduct includes denying the death of her father, poisoning her lover, and preserving his corpse in her house for forty years. These events allude to a psychological disorder known as denial, which Miss Emily is apparently experiencing. This study aims to  examine the unconscious motivations and conflicts that underlie Miss Emily's denial, it seeks to investigate the contribution of Emily's denial to the understanding of the overall themes of the short story, and it also endeavors to explore the implications that Emily's denial have about Faulkner himself. To achieve these objectives, the researcher employed an interpretive qualitative case study approach. Primary data are collected from the text of the short story and interpreted in the light of Sigmund Freud's theory of defense mechanisms. Secondary data include the biographical account of William Faulkner, the theoretical framework of Freud, and critical analyses of the short story under investigation. The findings of the study reveal that Miss Emily's denial stems from certain types of anxieties. Death and loss of love object anxiety and anxiety over change. These anxieties originate from the conflict between her id and superego. The study also infers that Emily's denial can be representative of the South's denial of its traumatic decline after the Civil War. The findings also suggest that Emily's denial can be seen as a projection of Faulkner's own fears and anxieties about the loss of the Southern values.
