Oral Corrective Feedback in the Teaching of EFL Grammar to Students of University of Tripoli

ABSTRACTThe past two decades have witnessed a considerable body of research on Oral Corrective Feedback (OCF) in language learning. It has been investigated by numerous scholars who believe that it is an essential element throughout the language learning process. This study explores the use of OCF in grammar classes by teachers at the University of Tripoli, along with examining the teachers and students’ attitudes toward OCF in grammar classes. The study could raise the teachers’ awareness of the different feedback strategies that can be employed. Thus, the teachers’ teaching performance and students’ learning process can reach the desired learning objectives. A multiple case-study mixed-method approach is adopted. The data has been collected through classroom observations, questionnaires and interviews. They were conducted at the Faculty of Languages, Arts and Education. The sample of the study consisted of eight teachers and 312 Students. The grammar classes at the three departments were observed, and later the teachers of the classes were interviewed. Finally, the questionnaires were distributed to the students of the observed classes. The findings of the study revealed the teachers’ positive beliefs towards OCF and their usage of its strategies in classroom. The results have also indicated that the most employed OCF strategies are explicit correction, clarification requests, and metalinguistic feedback. Moreover, the students expressed positive attitudes towards explicit correction too While the study offers a comprehensive analysis of the use of OCF in the University of Tripoli, further research is still needed in this area.Keywords: oral corrective feedback (OCF), OCF strategies, uptake, repair.
