Adel EL TAGURI is one of the staff members at the Department of Community Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine- of the University of Tripoli. He joined the department in 1996. He is working as a lecturer since 2016-05-01. He teaches mainly child Health, Health Systems and Quality, and Nutrition.  He has several publications in his field of his interest.

Careers

Before joining the Community Medicine Department in 1996, Dr. Adel EL TAGURI worked as a pediatrician at both Benghazi Children's Hospital and Tajoura General Hospital at that time. He then completed his academic studies in health development and nutritional epidemiology, in addition to his subspecialty in pediatric nutrition diseases in France. Dr. Adel also worked as a deputy of the Faculty of Medicine at the Libyan International University and head of the Department of Public Health, where he worked with his colleagues to develop medical education at this leading university. In 2013, he was assigned by His Excellency the Minister of Health as Director of Quality and Patient Safety at the Ministry of Health, and he established the National Center for Accreditation of Health Establishments and then was appointed by the Head of the Presidential Council as its Director General in 2018 until now.

Research Interests

Dr. EL TAGURI has several research papers in the fields of health systems and child nutrition. He also has several research publications in joint works with several international organizations, such as the relief and humanitarian situation in Libya in 2011 with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), assessing the health status of migrants in detention centers in 2017 with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and the reality of medical education in Libya in 2023 with the German Agency for Cooperation (GIZ). Among the most important of these publications is a joint work as a national expert with the Center for Studies, Research and Statistics of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (SESRIC) on developing the health system in Libya in 2022.

External Activities

Given the nature of his specialization in community medicine and Dr. El-TAGURI’s background in applied epidemiology, he has several activities outside the university. He has participated in implementing and conducting a large number of national surveys with local institutions and international organizations. He also served as Director of Quality and Patient Safety at the Ministry of Health and as the Director General of the National Center for Accreditation of Health Establishments. For years, Dr. El-TAGURI has contributed to the writing of the National Childhood Report in Libya, which is officially submitted to the United Nations. Dr. El-TAGURI headed the health team assigned by the National Council for Economic and Social Development to forward health development proposals to the government, where the team’s work culminated in drafting the Service Availability Regulations, which were submitted for approval by the Prime Minister’s Council.
