Description

The basic program of the College of Nursing is to grant graduate students a bachelor's degree. Where the college prepares specialists in the field of nursing and these areas are nursing service, nursing education, vocational nursing, the Ministry of Health, hospitals and health facilities and all state institutions that have (clinics - health units - in addition to private clinics).

The study program for obtaining a bachelor's degree in nursing requires the student to pass (8) semesters for a period of four years with (132) accredited study units. These units include requirements for the university and others for the college, in addition to the requirements of the departments of the Faculty of Nursing and supporting materials.

Objectives

The strategic objectives of the study program are crystallized in the following:

Providing efficient curricula that ensure the provision of sound academic and professional fundamentals for the practice of the nursing profession.

Preparing highly qualified and professional nurses who are equipped with sufficient knowledge and skills to meet the demands and challenges of the times.

Contribute to the advancement of knowledge and training for patients by supporting research activities conducted by faculty members.

Outcomes

The college aims to graduate nursing cadres and leaders capable of managing, treating and making the appropriate decision when dealing with various pathological cases through correct scientific analysis, critical thinking, and the use of the outputs and results of scientific research in the nursing process.

Certificate Rewarded

The academic qualification obtained by the student upon completion of the study at the College: Bachelor of Nursing Sciences.

Entry Reuirements

1- He must have obtained a general or specialized secondary certificate, or its equivalent, according to the approved percentage for admission in order to register in colleges.

2- To successfully pass any test or personal interview conducted by the department.

3- He must be in good health.

4- He should be of good conduct and behavior.

Study Plan

The Bachelor in Science in Nursing prepares students to qualify for Bachelor in Science in Nursing. The student studies several subjects which have been carefully chosen in this major to cover its different aspects.

It comprises 8 Semesters of study, in which the student will study a total of 132 units, which include 69 units of general subjects, and 63 major units

This course focuses on the main concepts of individual, family and community in relation to their health needs, beliefs and practices. It discusses theories on health, wellness and illness which are important components in the delivery of holistic nursing care to client. It also includes the demonstration of different nursing skills in the promotion, maintenance of health and prevention of illness for clients to reach an optimal level of health across the lifespan.

Nursing has a significant effect on people lives. Rapid changes continue to transform the profession of nursing and the health care system. This course will provide opportunities for student to acquire knowledge and understanding of nursing as it was practiced years ago and comprehend present day nursing. This will prepare the students for the future by recognizing contemporary nursing practice as well as sociological and historical factors that affect nursing.

The Human Anatomy course involves the study of the structure of the human body including a gross and microscopic study of tissues and organ systems listed in the course outline. All major human organ system are completed by the completion of this course.

The course introduces to Semester 2 students on the basic structures and functions as well as organization of the human physiology. The course covers the fundamentals of human physiology, the organs and structures, and the complex processes the human body undergoes. The course discusses also the complex processes of the human body. Lecture and laboratory covers the topics from the basic structures, functions, histology and the general physiologic processes carried out by the different systems.

This course is the first clinical course designed to expose students to nursing as a field of practice. Through providing students with the laboratory guided experiences, they are expected to perform and master certain psychomotor skills of Basic Nursing Procedures like vital signs, nutrition, oxygenation, elimination, infection control, medication and charting and documentation. These basic introductory skills are presented according to the functional health patterns and through the application of the nursing process.

This course helps the student in the College of Nursing to know the grammatical, and rules of the Arabic language. He also learns the alot of written expression in the Arabic language. He also learns the positions of punctuation marks and how to use them, which qualifies him to write correctly and to have a good linguistic outcome.

This course includes topics concerned with the basics of the computer, the mechanisms of its use, and the skills of dealing with it practically and theoretically. It also includes all the details of the techniques and tools of modern technology used in the field of nursing that help students.

The course focuses on the care of childbearing women through stages of pregnancy as well as the first six weeks after birth. It also includes the care of a normal newborn and its priority needs. Utilizing the nursing process will further equip the students with the necessary skills, knowledge and proper attitude as well as values on health promotion, and identification of risks factors and proper management of normal pregnancy, pregnancy at risk and Normal newborn.

General psychology provides students with an overview with the theories and basic terms related to the study of the mind, along with such aspects as perception, cognition and emotion. psychology is the science of academic and description that involves the scientific study of human mental functioning and behavior across the lifespan.

The course is designed to orient and examine the students the general biology, life cycles, mode of transmission, and pathogenesis of major parasites on global human health. Explores a number of important disease, along with the diverse protozoans, worms and anthropods responsible for them.

This course assists students to integrate knowledge derived from the bio/psycho/social sciences, psychology, nursing and current literature to achieve safe, competent care of pediatric patients and their families who are experiencing normal development and alterations in body systems. Course content is organized by the nursing process in order to achieve best practice outcomes for pediatric patients and their families. The first part of the course deals with the peri-operative management of clients. This course is to prepare the students acquire appropriate knowledge, skills and proper attitude in the peri-operative care of clients utilizing the nursing process. This course includes a study of the patient's peri-operative experience, role and responsibilities of the surgical unit nurse, intra-operative nurse, and the post anesthesia nurse, principles and practice of sterile technique.

This course deals with pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, and clinical/therapeutic uses of drugs. The focus is on how drugs effects, in addition to how to evaluate the effects of the drugs given to the patient. It also deals with methods of calculating drug doses, including calculating doses for Pediatric. A detailed explanation of the different drug groups is also given. Such as analgesic and anti-inflammatory drugs, local anesthetics, drugs that affect the heart and the vascular system, and anticoagulants, in addition to the different methods of administering the drug and the factors affecting it.

To prepare the students acquire appropriate knowledge, skills, and proper attitude in providing a continuum of safe patient care in the perioperative environment by utilizing the Nursing process in accordance to established safe standards. This includes a study of the patient’s Perioperative experience, Roles and Responsibilities of the surgical unit nurse, intra-operative nurse and the post anesthesia nurse; Principles and Practice of Sterile Technique; Operating Room Hazards; and Introduction to Surgical Technique. This will guide them in preparing the theater aseptically, maintaining sterility of instrument and supplies, and storage of equipment in a safe environment. It is also design to train students to provide a comprehensive, safe and effective nursing care in carrying out nursing procedures and other nursing activities in Wound Management and Common Abdominal Surgeries.

This course covers theories and concepts that will enable students to critically analyze the health needs and concerns of the individual, family and community with regards to clients experiencing high risk pregnancies and complicated deliveries. Classroom and related learning experiences will enable the students to develop skills, knowledge and proper attitude and values on health promotion and identification and management of risk factors that contributed to high risk pregnancies. It also deals with concepts, principles and theories of human behavior in the care of high risk women and unborn babies in relation to problems contributing to the development of high risk pregnancies.

This course includes the concept of late Adulthood and its implications for nursing practice from holistic perspectives. It focuses on the intervention for health promotion, health maintenance. Disease prevention and self-care unique to older adults to ensure their overall well-being. The study of infection Control and Communicable Disease Nursing will provide the students’ knowledge and skills on the different diseases that is transmitted directly or indirectly from one person to another. It aims to identify what and how diseases are transmitted and the measures to prevent infection. Students will be equipped with basic concepts in Palliative Care, holistic patient care and pain management. It also offers spiritual care and counsel about end of life decisions among families of clients requiring Palliative care.

This course deals with the study of food and its relationship to health. It covers the types of nutrients and other substances and their function, and the way they interact in the human body, in terms of digestion, absorption and transport, in addition to the method of calculating calories and the ideal body weight. It also focuses on the therapeutic and nutritional aspects of providing food services in hospitals and other health care institutions.

Mental Health course is designed to provide a basic understanding of communication therapeutic techniques, principles of mental health/mental illness, stress management, crisis intervention, family violence dynamics, and personality development. It also deals with the therapeutic nurse-patient relationship, and the mental health nurse's roles, prevention, and management.

This course is design to impart an understanding of current pain theories relevant to the biopsychosocial, holistic model of pain management to achieve optimal quality of life. It also describes local and systemic infections, the effects of inflammation, description and purpose of inflammation. It also deals with the earliest response to pathogens, how pathogen enters the body and can cause diseases as well as cellular aberrations. The course also deals with the principles and techniques of nursing care managements of sick clients across the lifespan in any setting with fluid, electrolytes and acid-base imbalance, cellular aberrations and neoplastic conditions and problems in oxygenation.

It describes what community/public health nursing is in the context of Libyan health care delivery system and in the community development.

It covers theories and concept that will enable students to critically analyse the health needs and concerns of the individual, family and community with regards to clients experiencing alterations in blood, endocrine, cardiovascular and the peripheral system. It discusses the different disorders and tackles the modalities in the management and treatment of patients having those kinds of disorders. Classroom and laboratory experiences activities will enable the students to develop skills, knowledge and attitudes and values on health promotion and identification and management of the risk factors involved in those mentioned disorders.

The course equips the students with the necessary knowledge, skills and proper attitude to deal with the perioperative care of surgical patients with emphasis on the intraoperative procedure which includes the definition, discussions, procedural steps and preparation of the patient in the following procedures on nasal, neck, throat, thoracic, cardio--vascular and genitourinary surgeries and kidney transplant. The skills laboratory will enable the students to enhance their skills in the Health teachings, safe positioning practices, skin preparation, draping techniques, and instrumentation, and other special procedures for specific operation.

This course is a continuation of the pervious course NU 321. It discusses the fundamental concepts of critical care nursing and tools used by the critical care nurse. It includes hemodynamic monitoring, ventilator assistance, code management and introduction to anesthesia.

This course is designed to provide students the fundamental concepts of critical care nursing, equipment used in the area and assessment procedures done by critical care nurses. It also focus on Nurses’ responsibilities to make the patient’s welfare their first consideration during the surgical experience. Emphasis given to pre-operative care, intraoperative and post-operative obligations in patient’s acquiring knowledge, skills and attitudes in taking care of patient in surgery. Rehabilitation Nursing provides help to individuals affected by chronic diseases or physical disabilities to adapt to their disabilities, achieve greatest potential and work toward productive and independent lives.

This course deals with the discussion and analysis of the pathophysiology of the life-threatening injuries and disorders of human, and the provision of comprehensive care. It also deals with commonly used drugs, current research with accompanying analysis in critical care nursing. Included are further discussions on shock and sepsis, cardiovascular alterations, neurological alterations, respiratory failure and renal failure.

This course builds on the previous knowledge gained in Maternal and Child Nursing 2. Specifically, it tackles various complications affecting newborns and their families. Health problems, health threats related to high risk newborn will be discussed. Advanced concepts and roles of a nurse specialist pertaining to holistic care of high risk newborn and its therapeutic management will be discussed using the nursing process as a tool to nursing care.

The course will equip the semester 7 SOTNS students with the necessary knowledge, understanding and proper attitude to deal with perioperative care and management of surgical patients with emphasis on the intraoperative phase following operative procedures specifically on Ophthalmic Surgery, Ear Surgery, Gynecologic & Obstetric Surgery, Neurologic Surgery, Plastic Surgery and Orthopedic Surgery. To enhance the intraoperative skills of the students on proper and safe positioning, draping techniques, skin preparation and instrumentation in the department of Ophthalmic Surgery, Ear Surgery, Gynecologic & Obstetric Surgery, Neurologic Surgery, Plastic Surgery and Orthopedic Surgery.

This course is a continuation of Nursing Research I which includes research design and methodology. Lectures and discussion includes collection of data, analysis, interpretation, summary, conclusion and recommendation. Advising is done throughout the practicum sessions. The final output of the course is a complete project which is presented during the annual students-faculty research forum.

This course deals with the concepts, principles, and the care of adult clients who are experiencing common medical surgical conditions in the health illness continuum specifically with gastrointestinal, genitor-urinary and reproductive problems. This will also equip the students with the necessary knowledge and skills in the assessment and in rendering life-saving measures to clients in acute biologic crisis which may arise in or out of the hospital area. It also includes Basic Life Support training.

Actual application of the theories, principles and concepts of clinical nursing practice to groups of clients in varied settings to refine nursing skills in the chosen area of nursing specialization. This practicum experience focuses on the synthesis of previously gained knowledge and skills in the provision of advanced nursing care to individuals, families and communities. Emphasis is placed on management of clients within a clinical focus area. This course also focuses in developing skills and competencies in the different subspecialties of critical care nursing that include such areas as neonatal intensive care, adult intensive care, neonatal intensive care, maternal intensive care, post-anesthesia care units, surgical intensive care and also hemodialysis units.

Actual application of the theories, principles and concepts of clinical nursing practice to groups of clients in varied settings to refine nursing skills in the chosen area of nursing specialization. Under Specialization 3, the students are exposed at the Mental Health facility where they can apply the learned concepts and skills in the care of clients with maladaptive patterns of behavior.

This course discuss the basic concepts, principles and theories of human behavior and nursing care of individuals, population group experiencing alterations in perception and coordination in varied settings. It also emphases the role of the nurse in the curative and rehabilitative nursing care management and in client with Integumentary disorders.
