Research Interests

Nahla Labyad's research work primarily focuses on pharmacognosy, which involves the study of medicinal plants and natural products, particularly those found in Libya. Her key research areas and contributions include:

 * Phytochemical Screening and Analysis: A significant portion of her work involves identifying and characterizing the chemical constituents (phytochemicals) present in various plant extracts. This includes compounds like flavonoids, phenols, tannins, saponins, and fixed oils, which are often responsible for the plants' medicinal properties. She has applied these techniques to:

1- Libyan Date Varieties (Phoenix dactylifera L.): She has extensively studied the seeds and other parts of different Libyan date cultivars (e.g., Saidi, Hamarai, Degla, Bestian, Abel, Khadrai), analyzing their physicochemical properties, proximate composition (moisture, protein, ash), and phytochemical profiles. This research aims to explore their potential as natural therapeutic agents and nutritional supplements.

2- Libyan Propolis: She has investigated the phytochemical, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties of Libyan propolis ethanolic extracts.

3-  Other Libyan Plants: Her research also extends to other Libyan plants such as Convolvulus dorycnium, Juglans regia (walnut) leaves, and Henna (Lawsonia inermis L.), examining their chemical composition and biological activities.

 * Antimicrobial Activity: A major theme in her research is the evaluation of the antimicrobial (antibacterial and antifungal) properties of natural extracts. This is crucial in the context of growing antimicrobial resistance. She has tested extracts against various bacterial species like Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

 * Antioxidant and Anti-inflammatory Properties: Beyond antimicrobial effects, she also investigates the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory potential of these natural products, which are important for combating oxidative stress and inflammation-related diseases.

 * Hair Growth Promotion: More recently, her research has explored the hair growth-promoting potential of date fruit and seed extracts, aligning with the need for natural solutions for hair loss.

One of her key publications is titled: "Evaluation of the stability of morphine sulphate in combination with Instillagel® R" from 2008. This publication is important because it directly addresses a practical clinical need in pain management by providing scientific evidence on the stability of a commonly compounded topical opioid preparation. This ensures that patients receive safe and effective treatment, and it guides best practices in pharmaceutical compounding.

 * Authentication and Standardization: She has also conducted studies on the authentication and standardization of natural products in the Libyan market, for instance, examining commercial henna hair dyes for adulteration.

Overall, Nahla Labyad's research significantly contributes to the understanding and potential utilization of Libya's rich biodiversity for pharmaceutical and nutraceutical applications, with a strong focus on natural product chemistry and biological activity and shows that she has a background in pharmaceutical analysis and quality control, particularly concerning the stability of active pharmaceutical ingredients in various formulations.
