Master in Geophysics

Faculty of Science - Department of Geophysics

Description

This program grants a master's degree in geophysics by studying a number of specialized and supporting courses, and after passing them, a research project is presented in geophysics topics supported by research papers.

Objectives

1. Preparing the student adequately scientifically so that he can master the basics of geophysics in order to draw the required results from practical experiments.

2. Giving the student the opportunity to study in-depth in the fields of geophysics while using the necessary methods to keep pace with and enrich modern scientific research.

3. Guiding and training the student on scientific research methods while allowing him to participate and contribute in his field of specialization, under the supervision of specialists.

4. Identify the basic concepts in the various fields of geophysics, as well as employing these principles and basic concepts in the student's future professional life.

5. The student should be familiar with and master modern technologies in order to employ them and choose the appropriate career path for him.

Outcomes

  • Understand the basics of geophysics.
  • The ability to build research cadres for university teaching in the field of geophysics.
  • Learn to write scientific research.

  • The applicant must have a bachelor's degree from a recognized educational institution.
  • The applicant must successfully pass the admission test prepared by the department.
  • The department has the right to compare the applicants through the result of the differentiation exam to choose the best, according to the number specified for the batch by the department.
  • Admission does not contradict the regulations governing postgraduate studies in Libyan universities or the internal regulations for postgraduate studies in the college.
  • The applicant must have studied and successfully passed the preliminary (remedial) courses, in case he was asked to do so, according to the requirements of the courses for the postgraduate program.

Study Plan

The Master in Geophysics prepares students to qualify for Master in Geophysics. The student studies several subjects which have been carefully chosen in this major to cover its different aspects.

It comprises 6 Semesters of study, in which the student will study a total of 38 units, which include 12 units of general subjects, and 0 major units, 18 of elective units. In addition to a final project in the student's major.

Study plan for this program is shown below:

1st Semester

Code Title Credits Course Type Prerequisite
GP600 Mathematical Methods in Geophysics 03 Compulsory +

This course aims to introduce the student to coefficients, differential operations, and partial differential equations in geophysics, methods for arriving at their solutions, familiarity with Fourier functions and their integrals, and learning about linear systems, Z-transforms, and the properties of their coefficients.

GP601 Potential Field Theory 03 Compulsory +

This course aims to acquaint the student with how to accurately process gravitational and magnetic data and interpret their information using modern technologies and introduce him to the first and horizontal derivatives and the Wagier and Euler method for studying the depths of the Earth.

2nd Semester

Code Title Credits Course Type Prerequisite
GP602 Theoretical Seismology 03 Compulsory +

Advanced Seismology explores the theoretical background of wave propagation in the earth and the new techniques being developed to determine earth structure and earthquake source processes. Many classic problems in introductory mathematical seismology (stress-strain, reflection coefficients, ray theory, earthquake location, etc.) will be reviewed, plus the character and interpretation of seismograms.

GP604 Geo-electrical Methods 03 Compulsory +

This course aims to familiarize the student with the various electrical and electromagnetic methods, surface and well self-potential, its sources and types, devices, methods of measurement and interpretation, applications in the field of dispersed metals and non-dispersed metals, the application of resistivity and apparent conductivity maps, as well as the use of electrical coefficients to describe geoelectric layers and isotropic coefficients, isotropy test, and learning about horizontal scanning methods. The vertical and different layers are the principle of equivalence in electrical interpretation, direct and indirect electrical interpretation.

3rd Semester

Code Title Credits Course Type Prerequisite
GP606 Borehole Geophysics 03 Compulsory +

This course aims to familiarize the student with the measurements and recordings that take place inside the well according to the type of physical property of the rock to be studied, the basic elements that make up the layers of the earth inside the well, and the corrections to the data that are made after recording, and if the layers contain oil, water, or gas initially, by comparing the results. recordings together.

TW600 Technical Writing 02 General +

This course is deleted that the student is able to organize the research program) the graduation project (and its coordination, organizing and arranging ideas, describing tables and shapes and analyzing them and writing in a smooth and harmonious way and in the scientific context and preparing the research proposal and writing scientific reports according to the requirements of the plan to write the research project and cover KEFA topics writing sentences and time Suggestions and project proposal

4th Semester

Code Title Credits Course Type Prerequisite
GP607 Nuclear Geophysics 03 Compulsory +

This course aims to introduce the student to the use of nuclear physics in the field of geophysics, specifically the study and measurement of radiation, particles, and nuclear energy that are emitted from various minerals and rocks. This leads to the detection of various radioactive elements, radioactive metals and rocks, or minerals associated with radioactive minerals. The method was also used to identify some different geological structures, as well as the use of nuclear geophysics in the field of research and exploration for water and oil.

6th Semester

Code Title Credits Course Type Prerequisite
GP635 Geophysical Seminar 03 Compulsory +

This course aims to familiarize the student with collecting information, the ability to deliver, and use the computer - visual presentation program, and to help develop skills and ways of thinking in dealing with scientific research, and for the student to be able to discuss (or defend in his own way) his ideas.

GP636 M.Sc. Thesis 06 Compulsory +

This course aims to achieve the following:1- The student is familiar with the mechanism of doing the research, completing the results, analyzing them, writing a message and defending them2- Helping to develop the skills and methods of thinking about dealing with scientific research.3- The ability to solve and address a physical issue in one of the theoretical or practical branches4- The ability to write reports, submit and discuss light offers, and discuss (or defend his style) on his ideas
