The postgraduate program started in 2008, where the Department of Home Economics grants a master's degree in food and nutrition, and the student must pass no less than 36 study hours during 6 semesters (3 years) that include 18 compulsory specialized units, 6 optional specialized units, 6 supporting units, 6 units research

Masters holders specialize in food and nutrition, equipped with the necessary theoretical and practical information to fulfill the tasks of improving health and nutrition, conducting research and disseminating concepts and information in food and nutrition, applying science, facts and scientific discoveries to the science of nutrition, analyzing and interpreting problems related to nutritional and health aspects related to the economic and physiological situation, and finding appropriate solutions to improve the life of the individual And the advancement of society

 

Objectives

The postgraduate program in the field of food and nutrition in the Department of Home Economics aims to:

  •  Introducing the problems and challenges in the field of food, nutrition and health facing the community through conducting research and studies, supporting various educational resources, and making use of communication means to obtain information.
  • Using the necessary theoretical, practical and applied information and scientific foundations related to the field of food, nutrition and food science to perform the tasks of improving health and improving and developing nutrition among consumers through print, visual and audio media and through participation in periodic programs within the community to ensure continuity of nutritional guidance and education.
  • Employing scientific information, facts and discoveries to serve the science of nutrition and other related sciences by using scientific techniques in the field of evaluating and assuring the quality of food products and related food services.
  • Classification of local and international programs and projects related to nutrition, which deals with the study of the different stages of growth of individuals.
  • Finding appropriate solutions by benefiting from published scientific research that covers all aspects related to proper healthy nutrition.

Outcomes

By completing all requirements for success in the program, the graduate will be able to:

a. Knowledge and understanding

  •   Recognize nutritional terms and the relationship between types of food and nutrition on scientific basis and their impact on health
  • It mentions the developments of nutrition and chemistry laboratories and other resources related to nutrition and health
  • Explains the various scientific devices used in the field of food and nutrition that may be useful in the completion of research
  • It distinguishes scientific methods, how to conduct and evaluate field studies, and how to develop therapeutic nutritional plans
  • Shows the services provided by the various institutions concerned with the field of nutrition and health within the community

  •        He compares what he taught and how it is applied in practical life in the field of food and nutrition within educational institutions
  • Identifies and diagnoses diseases resulting from malnutrition through some indicators that show this
  • Scientific thinking is applied using scientific equipment in the field of food by preparing balanced meals with nutritional value
  • Formulates solutions and treatments for diseases resulting from malnutrition, such as thinness and obesity, by developing therapeutic nutritional plans and following up on that.
  • Criticizes the services provided and the food systems used within the institutions in terms of defects and advantages, and finds solutions for that

C- Practical & professional skills

  •     Developing the concept of nutritional and health education within the various institutions
  • A lunch survey scheme is designed, information is collected, periodicals are used, and conclusions are drawn
  • Benefit from modern technologies in collecting information and using different sources for scientific research

Entry Reuirements

For admission to the Master`s degree at the Faculty of Agriculture, the following is required:1. The applicant must have a bachelor's degree in agricultural sciences or equivalent certificates recognized by the competent authority for certificate equivalency.2. The applicant should not have been previously dismissed from a postgraduate program in any other educational institution.3. The applicant must pass the admission  exam prepared by the scientific department .4. The applicant must be a habitual resident of Libya when accepted to study at the faculty.5. Priority for admission is given to teaching assistants who are candidates for postgraduate studies from universities and higher education institutions in Libya without burdening them with an entrance exam and comparison.6. Candidates from public entities are subject to admission and preference exams, with the exception of candidates under provisions including scientific cooperation agreements approved and in force at the university and in a manner that does not contradict the provisions of the articles of this regulation.7 . Foreign students who receive scholarships are accepted in accordance with the terms of the agreements concluded between the State of Libya and other countries and regional and international organizations affiliated to it.8. Submitting evidence of the employer's approval - with regard to workers - to devote themselves to study, partially or completely.9. Students holding higher diplomas may be admitted to the corresponding departments, provided that they take complementary courses as a condition determined by the scientific department according to the controls set forth in this bylaw.10. The required documents, original and approved by the competent authorities, shall be submitted to the Office of Postgraduate Studies and Training at the Faculty to conduct the admission  exam in accordance with the dates set by the Department of Postgraduate Studies and Training at the University.

The Master in Home Economics prepares students to qualify for Master in Home Economics. The student studies several subjects which have been carefully chosen in this major to cover its different aspects.

It comprises 6 Semesters of study, in which the student will study a total of 36 units, which include 0 units of general subjects, and 24 major units, 6 of elective units. In addition to a final project in the student's major.

It is also interested in studying the factors affecting consumption and the global food economic situation and trying to solve food problems to prevent the occurrence of the food gap in order to reach a high standard of living for individuals and thus increase the national welfare of the members of society
