Professor Osama Hlal is the head of the Department of Geology. He teaches several subjects in his major and has several puplications in the field of his interest.

• Since 2009: Scientific supervision of a number of master's theses, research and graduation projects, Department of Geology, Faculty of Science, University of Tripoli, Tripoli, Libya.

• 2008 to date, participating in the arbitration of many scientific researches, which were published in local and international scientific journals.

• 2009 to date member of the research team in the project to study the Great Lake Fezzan and climate changes in the Libyan desert, which is within the framework of the cultural agreement concluded between the University of London and the Universities of Tripoli and Benghazi.

• 2008 - to date, a member of the research team in the Dur Al-Talh project in southern Libya, which is within the framework of the cultural agreement concluded between the Republic of France, represented by the University of Poitiers, and the Libyan State, represented by the University of Tripoli.

•  2008-2011 Member of the committee for reviewing and evaluating scientific papers at the Geology Conference in Southern Libya.

• 2013-2021 Head of the Study and Examinations Department, Faculty of Science, University of Tripoli.

• 2013-2021 Rapporteur of the Rehabilitation Committee to obtain an Intermediate Bachelor's Diploma from the Faculty of Science - University of Tripoli.

• 2014-2017 Member of the Study and Examinations Committee at the university level, which was formed by the decision of the President of the University No. (309), which is chaired by Mr. Dr. The Vice Rector for Student Affairs, which holds periodic meetings at least once a month.

• Since 2021, member of the editorial committee of the Libyan Journal of Science, formed according to the decision of Mr. Dr. Dean of the College of Science No. (16) for the year 2021.

• Since 2021, member of the advisory board of the scientific journal of the Faculty of Science - Sirte University, which was formed according to the decision of Mr. Prof. Dr. University President No. (428) for the year 2021.

• Since 2021, Chairman of the Faculty Affairs Committee at the University of Tripoli, formed according to the decision of Mr. Prof. Dr. President of the University of Tripoli No. (3051) for the year 2021.

• Since 2022, a member of the mini-committee of the Faculty Affairs Committee at the University of Tripoli, which is responsible for studying requests for scientific promotion and ensuring that they are published in the specialized authorities, requests for joining the work period before appointment, and studying requests for sabbatical leave formed according to the decision of Mr. Prof. Dr. President of the University of Tripoli No. (3049) for the year 2021.

Research Interests

The main research interest is in the sedimentary geology of clastic and calcareous rocks, with a focus on developing conceptual models linking the influence of Diagenesis processes on reservoir quality and development, as well as sedimentation and stratigraphic sequence. Osama Hlal has published numerous articles in local and international peer-reviewed journals and book chapters. He has worked as an associate editor for most journals in the field of sedimentology. Dr. Osama Hlal has done many research consulting works for several international oil companies. He also made many presentations in international and local conferences and short courses for universities and oil companies.

External Activities

• 2013: Visiting Professor for four months at the Department of Geology, College of Science, University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

• 2014 Member of the Selection Committee among applicants for the position of Teaching Assistant in the Department of Geophysics - College of Arts and Sciences - University of Al-Marqab.

• 2018-2019 Member of the Research Projects Follow-up Committee (Basic Sciences) formed according to the decision of Mr. Prof. Director General of the Natural Sciences and Technology Research Authority No. (332).

• 2019 to date, Chairman of the Research Projects Follow-up Committee (Basic Sciences) formed according to the decision of Mr. Prof. Director General of the Natural Sciences and Technology Research Authority No. (288).

• Member of the Scientific Committee of the First Scientific Conference of the College of Oil and Gas at Zawiya University under the slogan The Role of Earth and Environment Sciences in the Development of the Libyan Economy, held in March 2021.

• Chairman of the selection committee among faculty members applying to the Department of Geology - Misurata University, formed according to the decision of the President of Misurata University No. (436) for the year 2021.

• Since 2021 member of the national team in the Geoparks Program - State of Libya of the UNESCO Regional Office for Science in the Arab Countries in Cairo 2022.

• Member of the Scientific Committee of the Seventh Scientific Conference, which was organized by Bright Star University, entitled (Geology and Oil), which was held in December 2021.
