Roles

A faculty member in the Department of Statistics, Faculty of Science, University of Tripoli since 1989. He has taught many general and specialized courses in the field of statistics at the undergraduate and graduate levels at the university and in other universities. He has also supervised many bachelor’s and master’s graduation projects.

Careers

I was appointed as a teaching assistant in 1984 and then engaged in the first postgraduate program in statistics inside Libya in 1987, the first batch, and obtained the first master's degree granted inside Libya in December 1989. I was appointed as an assistant lecturer until the date of my dispatch to the State of Scotland to obtain a doctorate degree in 1991, which I obtained in 1995 from the University of Glasgow. Since then I worked as a faculty member on the degree of lecturer from then until I granted the degree of professor of statistics in 2013. During this journey, I taught many courses in the department, whether for undergraduate or master's students, especially mathematical statistics courses, and I also taught a course in Topics in mathematics (complex analysis and its uses in statistics) for graduate students. I supervised about 15 master's theses and participated in dozens of discussion committees to obtain a master's degree in various Libyan universities. I also participated in many workshops and scientific conferences inside and outside Libya and published many scientific research inside and outside Libya.

Research Interests

I have many research interests, for example, estimating unknown parameters of mixture probability distributions using the Expectation-Maximization algorithm (EM) of incomplete data. I also worked on research on innovative methods for estimating the parameters of gamma and Dirichlet distributions, and finally worked on research related to the construction of confidence intervals for the coefficient of variation and the noise to mean ratio for a Poisson populations.

External Activities

I worked as a statistical consultant for the Libyan Ministry of Tourism for a year and participated in workshops and some statistical research with the National Council for Economic Planning. I was selected as a member of the Scientific Committee for the preparation of the Statistical Conference of Islamic Countries held in Libya in 2007. I also worked as a lecturer in many Libyan universities and higher institutes and discussed dozens of master's theses in many Libyan universities and academies. Finally, I was chosen as a member of the committee to develop curricula for Libyan science faculties by a decision of the Minister of Higher Education for the year 2022
