Roles

For more then 16 years, Dr. Jamila Rizgalla works as Head of Department of Aquaculture from 2021 to the present time. Her primary role is to manage the Department and to coordinate the associated Research Unit. Dr. Jamila is a member of faculties Quality and Performance Evaluation Committee. In addition to her tasks teaching the undergraduate fish diseases course.

Careers

Prior to joining the Faculty of Agriculture, Dr. Jamila worked in several governmental and non-governmental institutions, during which she gained experiences. She worked in the National aquaculture project and the Drug and Food Control Centre, in addition to her work at the Anton Dorn Research institute in Naples / Italy. She joined 2008 the Faculty of Agriculture as assistant lecturer, and was assigned to head the department before enrolling 2010 in the Ph.D. in 2018 Dr. Jamila founded project snowball to study the biodiversity along the Libyan coast, combining field work with citizen science and social media. 

Research Interests

Dr. Jamila's interests are numerous, they include establishing a database of diseases that affect fish in Libya and studying the biodiversity of the Libyan coast, with special focus on invasive marine species and their impact on aquaculture.  She studies the causes of sea turtle mortality in Libya. Her work resulted in several publications in her field of study.

External Activities

In addition to acting as reviewer for several scientific journals, she is in collaboration with governmental agencies focusing on in aquaculture, environment and marine protected areas. She also cooperates with the institute of aquaculture (University of Stirling) as visiting lecturer. She organizes workshops, in collaboration with other universities and instructions both, governmental and non-governmental in the frame work of her strong interest in fish disease and the protection of sea turtles.
