Field Trip - Geology Department

To achieve a fruitful field training for the geology students, Prof.  Al-Mabrouk Al-Taher Bosriwal, the distinguished and brilliant geological scientist, led a field trip to the Al-Arban region on Friday, 20.01.2023, under the supervision of Prof.Osama Ahmed Helal, Head of the Geology Department, and with the assistance of:

Dr Najeeb Salem Bin Mousa

Mr. Mohammed Ammar Haman (Collaborator)

To study the basaltic flows in the Arban area, which is part of a volcanic field covering about 3000 square kilometers extending from Gharyan to Bani Walid.

The students studied the discoveries of rocks and identified field relationships in addition to geological structures and the impact of complex tectonic processes that the region was exposed to during different geological times in several places, namely:

Wadi Al-Hamam - Ras um Al-Ezz or um Al-Abbar - Ras Al-Massid - Al-Jama Al-Jamaa Al-Kabir and Al-Sagheel - Al-Muqrah Al-Taweel

The economic importance of volcanic rocks in the quarry between the Al Jammah Al Kabeerah and Al Jammah Al Sagheerah was also identified.

Ras El Dabaa was also visited and the effect of water on volcanoes was identified for the formation of pyroclastics in addition to the study of stratigraphy and sedimentary structures.

Along the Wadi Boughalia  in the area of the Gamata Ar Ras, the sequences of basaltic lava flows have been identified and how some of them are located on top of the ancient Paleosoil, indicating that they are young.

In the Jaafara area, complex volcanoes were identified in Ras Zabiwa. Finally, the students visited the Ghorrat Mosbah to see the wind deflection on the road connecting Al-Arban and Bani Walid.

In this regard, the Department of Geology, represented by faculty members and students, is pleased to extend its thanks, and gratitude to Prof.  Al-Mabrouk Al-Taher Bousruel, Professor of generation, for the efforts he has made and is making and his keenness to complete the scientific program of the field trip in very difficult weather conditions.
