Abdulgader Dhawi is one of the staff members at the Department of Microbiology and Parasitology; Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.  He is working as an associate professor since 01-04-2021. He teaches general microbiology, bacteriology and food microbiology for undergraduate and postgraduate students. He has several publications in the field of his interest.

Careers

Once Mr. Dhawi got his BVSc. Degree from Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Tripoli in 1992; he and his colleagues established Almammoura Vet Clinic, where he practiced preventive and treatment activities for domestic animals and poultry farms. In 1995 Mr. Dhawi joined Department of Laboratories in Faculty of Medical Technology in Misuratah. In the following year he joined the Department Food Hygiene Faculty of Vet Medicine, University of Tripoli. In 2003 Dr. Dhawi obtained the MPhil degree From Faculty of Veterinary Science, University of Liverpool, UK. The MPhil research was about Spirocaetes in bovine digital dermatitis and severe virulent ovine foot rot. The techniques involved in this research were relevant to bacteriology, serology and molecular field. Since October 2003 Dr. Dhawi become a general microbiology and veterinary bacteriology lecturer at Department of Microbiology and Parasitology, Faculty of Vet Medicine, University of Tripoli.  In 2012 Dr. Dhawi gained the PhD degree from School of Veterinary Medicine and Science; University of Nottingham; UK. The PhD research was based on Microarray tech investigation to reveal genes responsible for intensive Salmonella Enteritidis colonization in chicken gut. Salmonella Enteritidis is considered as a major concern associated with human food poisoning and huge economic risk in poultry industry worldwide. In 2013 Dr. Dhawi won a competitive scholarship for Libyan Universities staff-members from the Embassy of United States. It was a Fulbright Scholarship in Public Health Field at Nebraska Medical Center (NMC) University of Nebraska for four months.  Moreover Dr. Dhawi has cooperated with Faculty of Medicine, University of Alasmarya University during 2015-2016.  Dr. Dhawi also cooperated with Libyan Academy for Postgraduate studies since 2019 teaching the following scientific subjects: General Microbiology, Advanced Bacteriology and Food Microbiology. A major contribution from Dr. Dhawi in establishing Faculty of Agriculture and Faculty of Medical Technology; Aljafara University. Besides he held the position of dean of the Faculty of Medical Technology since its establishment in 2018.

Research Interests

Dr. Dhawi research interests during his MPhil research at University of Liverpool Vet Faculty focused on isolation and molecular characterization of spirochetes incriminated in bovine digital dermatitis at UK farms. Besides comparing these spirochetes with those isolated from cases of severe virulent ovine foot rot. The comparison was made on bacteriological, serological and molecular aspects. Valuable results were generated as shown high impact published scientific papers. Dr. Dhawi and colleagues have research activity investigated the main major pathogens incriminated in Libyan bank notes. One of main advantages of Fulbright scholarship in 2013. Moreover, Dr. Dhawi and colleagues from Tripoli University Medical Faculties had research collaboration with experts from Creighton University School of Medicine, Omaha, NE, and Indiana University School of Public Health-Bloomington, IN, USA. The research was about Characterization of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus isolated at Tripoli Medical Centre. Since the emergence of COVID-19 epidemic in 2020; Dr. Dhawi was among the pioneers in educational campaign and he has more than 40 lectures and workshop at health and educational institutions besides his contributions in survey studies to understand the epidemiology of this epidemic and its social and economic impact in Libya.

External Activities

External activities for Dr. Dhawi represented in reviewing many scientific papers relevant to his speciality. These papers were written by Libyan staff-members who belong to many departments in Libyan Universities for scientific promotion.  Moreover, Dr. Dhawi was assigned as an external examiner for many postgraduate students discussion viva at University of Zawia and Libyan Academy for Postgraduate studies. He also a member of Libyan Academics and Researchers Organisation; which organised First International Libyan Water Conference in 2018 in Tripoli-Libya in which Dr. Dhawi was among the scientific committee.
