Description

 The Department of Geology offers its educational program to obtain a university degree (Bachelor of Science in geology) within a period of four years (8 semesters), during which the student can choose courses according to the scheduled time and his capabilities. This program is designed to be scientifically distinguished (according to the curricula of North American universities). It is coherent and methodologically flexible, with the opportunity for the student to choose a set of elective courses suitable to his inclinations and goals. This program requires the student to pass (137) study credits.

Objectives

The Department of Geology generally aims to achieve outputs that the graduate is supposed to acquire after the successful completion of the educational programme through the following:

1. Preparing and qualifying students in the various fields of geology in the bachelor's degree through advanced scientific curricula to meet the needs of the labour market of public and private institutions of the State, especially the oil, water and mining sectors.

2. Providing the proper scientific conditions for bachelor's students through the scientific material of courses adopted in theory and practice and applying them in a field work courses to qualify students academically, scientifically and technically.

3. Leveraging important geological sites in Libya scientifically and creating outstanding research projects at the local and global levels.

4. Work on the ongoing development of the Geology Department and Geological Museum and to support it with various samples of minerals, rocks and research that represent Libya's geological history, to serve as a shrine for geologists as well as for school students and public entities from Libya and abroad, thereby enhancing knowledge of this field.

5. Contribute to environmental studies and research through joint work with the competent authorities to preserve the environment and its integrity and track different sources of pollution to reduce the aggravation of this phenomenon.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the educational program, the student should have acquired the skills that enable him to use what he studied in professional applications, the most important of which are the following: 

1. The ability to search for natural resources and (oil, gas, minerals and water) and evaluate them quantitatively and qualitatively.

2. The ability to aggregate geological data, place them in different formats and interpret them.

3. The ability to examine and benefit from previous work and receive information from different sources and update it periodically.

4. The ability to use laboratories and field equipment safely to collect information and train on the foundations of organizing exhibitions and geological museums.

5. The ability to contribute to the assessment of environmental problems resulting from the overexploitation of natural resources and minimize their future impacts.

Entry Reuirements

Students are admitted to the Geology Department in accordance with the following requirements:

1.The student applying to study in the department shall be entitled to a certificate of completion of secondary education or its equivalent in accordance with the procedures and regulations issued by the Ministry of Education at Libyan universities.

2. The documents required for admission shall be determined by the competent scientific committee of the Faculty of Science.

3. The scientific program accepts students from the corresponding departments in other colleges, provided that the student submitting the documents showing the courses studied, the scientific content of each of them, the number of credits for each course and the transcript. The academic file shall be forwarded to the coordinator of the academic programme in the department to complete the equivalent procedures.

The Department's capacity is estimated to be 50 new students every semester and can be increased if appropriate support is available.

The percentage of students enrolled in the department is actually 100%.

Study Plan

The Bachelor in geology prepares students to qualify for Bachelor in geology. The student studies several subjects which have been carefully chosen in this major to cover its different aspects.

It comprises 8 Semesters of study, in which the student will study a total of 137 units, which include 24 units of general subjects, and 87 major units, 6 of elective units. In addition to a final project in the student's major.
