The agricultural sector is one of the pillars of any country’s economies. In fact, it is the main pillar for achieving food security. Despite the huge of investments spent on the agricultural sector in Libya and the great interest of agricultural development plans set over the past decades, the desired goals have been achieved yet. On the contrary, the deficit in agricultural production increased during this period, especially in the most essential food groups, such as grains, meat and dairy. It still threatens the food security of society. The most important immediate problems facing the agricultural sector at the local level are desertification, intrusion of sea water, spread of pests, weakness of marketing programs, and failure to apply the regulations and legislation in place to protect local production. To overcome these problems, opportunities are available to benefit from the scientific and technical development in the field of agricultural production, especially with regard to the diversification and development of irrigation water sources, and the successful applications of biotechnology. These have opened broad horizons for selection and improvement of productive characteristics, tolerance of drought and salinity, and resistance to pests.
The foresaid introduction clearly shows the need to follow agricultural policies based on advanced scientific foundations to advance the agricultural sector at the local level. The Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Tripoli, as the first national Faculty of Agriculture, is a house of expertise that plays the most significant role for the advancement of the agricultural sector and the achievement of food security for this community. It is from this prestigious Faculty that many professors and experts have graduated who are now leading prominent scientific institutions inside Libya and in different institutions all over the world.
The role of the Faculty of Agriculture lies in preparing and qualifying specialized cadres in the field of agricultural sciences, conducting research and studies that would contribute to solving problems and difficulties facing the agricultural sector. It works on spreading a culture of agricultural promotion in the country, participating in agricultural guidance programs, training and qualifying workers in the agricultural field. In addition, it cooperates with all relevant institutions and bodies in Libya and abroad.
Despite all the challenges that the Faculty of Agriculture faced during the difficult circumstances the country has been witnessing, it continued to fulfill its educational and research mission to serve the community in the areas of food science and technology. These challenges can be summarized in three main points:
1. Lack of laboratory and office capabilities, which reflected negatively on the educational and research processes.
2. Lack of material resources to conduct researches and experiments.
3. The reluctance of students to join the Faculty of Agriculture. This perhaps due to the lack of awareness of students about the importance of agricultural sciences and technologies, their role in the development of the economies of countries.
The Faculty of Agriculture is a beacon of knowledge in agricultural sciences and a haven of expertise for society.
It keeps pace with scientific development and harnesses technologies to serve the community and develop the educational process to graduate competent engineers capable of serving society with high competitiveness.
The Faculty of Agriculture aims at:
· Developing the academic performance
· Developing the faculty administration system
· Developing the quality of research
· Developing the educational process
