An Explorationof the communication Strategies Used when Cultural Laden words are Translated from Japanese to Arabic in ELF Interaction

AN EXPLORATION OF THE COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES USED WHEN CULTURE-LADEN WORDS ARE TRANSLATED FROM JAPANESE TO ARABIC IN ELF INTERACTION STEPHANIE ANN HOUGHTON AND KHALIFA AL ASSWAD ABSTRACT The purpose of the study described in this paper is to support the development of intercultural ELF pedagogy by connecting Kirkpatrick’s (2007a) lingua franca approach to English language education with Byram’s (1997) model of intercultural communicative competence through action research. Conducted in an English language course at a university in southern Japan by a British and a Libyan teacher-researcher, it explores the communication strategies used during the translation of culture-laden Japanese words into Arabic in real-time interaction using English. Audio-recorded data of five dialogues in which ten Japanese students attempted to teach the Libyan teacher-researcher culture-laden Japanese words in English to elicit translations into Arabic were transcribed and analysed by extending and adapting Kirkpatrick’s (2007b) list of ASEAN ELF communication strategies. Ethical issues were duly considered. A range of communication strategies will be presented that can be incorporated into materials and methods, which may potentially be expanded upon by drawing on existing communication strategy research. The implications of such an approach will be considered in relation to the setting of learning objectives, task and syllabus design, and the role of teachers and students as intercultural mediators. Treatment of Scientific and Technical Terminology in in the Processes of Popularisation and Translation

Abstract: The issue addressed by this dissertation is rendition of technical terms in the process of translation and that of the popularization of science. The aim of the study is to examine the means of term treatment in both processes translation and popularization. The researcher hypothesize that similar technique are used in both processes . Translation models including : the grammatical model, the cultural model and the text type model were demonstrated. Meanwhile, a short review of some approaches of popularization and simplification including Ogden’s Basic English for science and Michael West’s criteria of selection of simplified readings as well as W. Flood’s discussion of the problems of vocabulary in the popularization of Science were presented. Samples of original scientific texts and versions of popularized texts of the original were compared to deduce the techniques used for popularization. The Use of Translation as a Strategy in Learning English as a Foreign Language among Libyan University Students: Case Study on Students at English Department at the University of Tripoli

The use of translation in language learning has been controversially discussed. Studies in this respect are rooted in divergent opinions, where some support the use of translation and others encourage its absence. This study explores the use of translation as a strategy in learning English by undergraduate students at the English Language Department at the University of Tripoli in Libya. The study adopts the Inventory for Translation as a Learning Strategy to gain understanding of the use of translation in learning English by Libyan students majoring English. A number of 60 students were surveyed using a questionnaire to see if translation is a strategy they recourse to in learning English language skills. Although students are sometimes discouraged to use translation in classrooms, the results show that students tend to use translation in acquiring and developing their language skills. The data indicate that there is a correlation between learners’ proficiency level and their use of translation as a strategy.

التوظيف الإعلامي واللغوي للخطاب السياسي في ليبيا دارسة نقدية في المعاني والدلالات

تقدم هذه الدراسة نماذج تطبيقية الستخدام تحليل الخطاب في الدراسات والبحوث اإلعالمية من خالل تحليل بعض األساليب والمفردات اللغوية التي يستخدمها القادة والسياسيين بخطبهم السياسية للتأثير على الجمهور عبر وسائل اإلعالم المختلفة أثناء الحروب واألحداث الجارية، و التي من شأنها أن توجه رأي القارئ نحو بعض القضايا التي قد تخدم سياسة القادة والسياسيين. وقد استعانت الدراسة بالتحليل النقدي للخطاب للتعرف على هذه األساليب والمفردات واستخداماتها في النصوص اإلعالمية التي خضعت للتحليل، والمتمثلة في كلمة )ساعة الصفر( لخليفة حفتر "قائد القيادة العامة للقوات العربية المسلحة" وكلمة الرد على هذا الخطاب لفائز السراج "رئيس المجلس الرئاسي" اللتان تم بثهما في مارس 2020 . ًضا سنتناول بعض التعقيدات التي قد تبدو مصاحبة عند التفكير في وخالل هذه الد ارسة أي استخدام تحليل الخطاب في الدراسات اإلنسانية عامة وفي الدراسات اإلعالمية خاصة، ولعل )1 )أبرز هذه التعقيدات هو عدم وجود اتفاق محدد حول مفهوم الخطاب واستخداماته وذلك لتنوع الطرق واألدوات، وحيث إن كل من هذه األساليب تحتوي في حد ذاتها على استخدامات مختلفة، )2 )وكما أن اختيارها وتحديدها يعتمد بشكل أساسي على النصوص التي يشتمل عليها الخطاب وسوف يتبين لنا كل هذا الحقاً في محور التحليل. أملنا في هذه الدراسة هو أن نسلط الضوء على الفحص النقدي لألساليب والمفردات اللغوية عبر وسائل اإلعالم، ودالالت هذه المفرادات وارتباطاتها التاريخية والسياسية التي يستخدمها القادة والسياسين بخطبهم السياسية لتوجيه رأي الجمهور نحو قضايا ما، وحول مدى مالءمتها المحتملة لإلجابة على السؤال الخاص بمشكلة البحث. هذا ما تصبوا إليه هذه الدراسة، تحديد لبعضاألدوات اللغوية المستخدمة في عينة الدراسة ووصفها، والتي تأتي تحت منهج التحليل النقدي للخطاب.

An Evaluation of the Accuracy of the Machine Translation Systems of Social Media Language

In this age of information technology, it has become possible for people all over the world to communicate in different languages through social media platforms with the help of machine translation (MT) systems. As far as the ArabicEnglish language pair is concerned, most studies have been conducted on evaluating the MT output for the standard varieties of Arabic, with fewer studies focusing on the vernacular or colloquial varieties. This study attempts to address this gap through presenting an evaluation of the performance of MT output for vernacular or colloquial Arabic in the social media domain. As it is currently the most widely used MT system, Google Translate (GT) has been chosen for evaluating the reliability of its output in the context of translating the Arabic colloquial language (i.e., Egyptian/Cairene Arabic variety) used in social media into English. With this goal in mind, a corpus consisting of Egyptian dialectal Arabic sentences were collected from social media networks, i.e., Facebook and Twitter, and then fed into GT system. The GT output was then evaluated by three human translators to assess their accuracy of translation in terms of adequacy and fluency. The results of the study show that several translation problems have been spotted for GT output. These problems are mainly concerned with wrong equivalents, inappropriate additions and deletions, and transliteration for out-of-vocabulary (OOV) words, which are mostly due to the literal translation of the Arabic vernacular sentences into English. This can be due to the fact that Arabic vernacular varieties are different from the standard language for which MT systems have been basically developed. This, consequently, necessitates the need to upgrade such MT systems to deal with the vernacular varieties.

Unseen Policies in News Translation: A Study Investigating News Translators’ Practices and Strategies

This paper explores the institutional practices of translating news articles by focusing on ideological representations and editorial guidelines. It also investigates the steps adopted by news translators when transferring news articles with a slight focus on Arabic. The study uses surveys in a form of interviews and questionnaire, which were delivered to a range of journalists and news editors involved in translating news. Their input is qualitatively analysed to find out how translation operates and how ideologies impinge upon translation products in media institutions. The paper enhances our understanding of the role of translators who work within ideologically-driven institutions. In particular, it reveals that the editorial policies of news institutions are not always stated and can at times be hidden. Moreover, a news item can be intentionally altered and news sources can be blurred, so that readers are kept unaware that the target text is a translation from various sources.

Localization Quality Assessment for More Reliable E-Commerce Applications in Arabic

E-commerce software and applications are mainly designed to let business go globally with less cost and higher accessibility. The localization of such software and websites into several languages is intended for reaching the largest number of consumers through minimizing the impact of linguistic, cultural, and technical barriers. Such barriers are assumed to affect the quality of localization and accordingly the reliability of the e-commerce software of website. In exploring the persistent problems influencing localization quality in the Saudi context, this study sought to analyze consumers’ perceptions and attitudes regarding the Arabic version of Saudi Amazon (Arabic Amazon.sa) in respect of accessibility, readability, understandability, and translatability issues. Toward this overarching objective, two main research instruments have been used: an online survey covering diverse localization problems and a zoom-based open discussion with the website’s users to collect some concrete examples of the problems influencing the localization quality and website’s reliability. The findings showed that although localization adopts a functional approach to translation for the sake of reaching a large number of consumers, most of the users of the Arabic version of Amazon.sa developed a negative attitude. Such a negative attitude evolved owing to some salient problems that negatively affected the quality of localization and the reliability of website. Although website’s localizers managed to adapt the English version both technically and culturally, some other linguistically oriented problems prevailed including partial translations, vague and misleading translations of promotional texts, inconsistent translation of headings, the foreignization of the website’s settings, the absence of text boundaries, and the occasional mismatches between the website’s English and the Arabic versions.

The Role of Critical Thinking in Enhancing EFL MA Students’ Academic Writing Outcomes: A Survey Study

Critical thinking skills are necessary tools for promoting postgraduates’ academic writing. This study explores postgraduates’ responses towards the role of critical thinking skills in academic writing courses. The study adopts Peter Honey Critical Thinking questionnaire which is delivered online to EFL MA students at the Department of English in the University of Tripoli in order to collect data. 20 students participate in the questionnaire which aims to find out whether EFL MA students are aware of the role of critical thinking skills in enhancing the writing of their written assignments and theses. The results reveal that EFL MA students are aware of the important role that critical thinking skills play in developing academic writing courses and in producing quality content texts.
