Dr. Hesham Taher Naas is a faculty member in the Food Hygiene and Control Department at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.  Mr. Hesham Naas has been working at the University of Tripoli as a faculty member since 01-12-2000 and has many contributions and scientific publications in his field of specialization.

Careers

Dr. Hesham Taher Naas is a faculty member at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine with the rank of a professor specializing in Meat Hygiene.  He was nominated as a teaching assistant in the Department of Food Hygiene and Control in 1993, and he obtained a master’s degree in Meat Hygiene in 1996, and a doctorate in Meat Hygiene and Ecology in 2000 from the Košice University of Veterinary Medicine in the Slovak Republic.  Since that time, he has joined the teaching and research process at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.  He progressed from the degree of lecturer until he obtained the degree of professor in 2019.  During that period, he held several positions in the faculty, including the head of the Food Hygiene and Control Department for several years.  He worked as a visiting professor at Clemson University, South Carolina, USA, and was a department's postgraduate studies coordinator.  He currently holds the position of curricula coordinator in the department.

Research Interests

Dr. Hesham Taher Naas is interested in scientific research related to Meta Hygiene, especially the safety of foods of animal origin, including the study of microbes resistant to antibiotics found in food.  Mr. Hesham Naas is a member of the research team for the genetic documentation of bacteria isolated from meat and dairy products in Libya and establishing the repository of strains of bacteria isolated from Libya present in food (FLBC), supported by the National Commission for Scientific Research.  He holds the position of head of the research team concerned with the safety of food of animal origin, which is registered at the Research and Consultation Center at the University of Tripoli.  He also supervised several master's theses in his field of specialization and has several scientific publications in local, regional international journals, in addition to his activities in attending conferences and internal and external discussion panels, the latest of which was participation in the Committee for Residues of Veterinary Drugs in Foods of Animal Origin (CODEX committee meeting 27th 2023).  Mr. Hesham Naas published a reference book in his field of specialization entitled Basic Principles of Meat Hygiene (Arabic language), Publications of the National Commission for Scientific Research 2008.

External Activities

Dr. Hesham Taher Naas is the chairman of the specialized sub-committee in meat, poultry, and eggs and a member of the Supreme Committee for Food of Animal Origin at the Libyan National Center for Standardization and Metrology (LNCSM).  He also serves as an arbitrator for several scientific journals, including the Open Veterinary Journal (OVJ), the Journal of the Marine Biology Research Center, Tajoura, and the Scientific Journal of the College of Agriculture, University of Tripoli, and he has participated in the supervision and discussion of master's theses at the Libyan Academy, Janzour.  He also provided several scientific consultations to many government agencies, including the Research and Consultation Center at the University of Tripoli and the Food and Drug Control Center in his field of specialization.  He also participated in presenting several live radio episodes on the issues of handling and spoilage of meat and abattoirs, the environmental pollution resulting from them, dealing with animals and carcasses on Eid al-Adha, and providing advice to citizens on some local radio stations, including Radio Tadamin, Al-Jawhara, Al-Bilad, Al-Rasmia, and others.  Mr. Hesham Naas also participated in the scientific committees to coordinate and prepare scientific seminars in the field of food of animal origin.  He also has an interest in the side of Halal food, and he gave several scientific awareness lectures in his area to several parties outside the university, including the Agricultural Research Center and the Blue Crescent Veterinary Clinic.  He conducted many interviews with him for the local press regarding meat contamination, the detection of sacrificial animals, and how to protect the consumers and the environment from pollution by slaughterhouse wastes.
