      The MA in Applied Linguistics is a program that allows you to develop expertise in specific areas of linguistics, such as corpus linguistics, cognitive linguistics, discourse analysis and/or language pedagogy. The program combines a range of core modules and optional modules to ensure that you develop a solid foundation in the discipline area whilst also having the flexibility to pursue your own specific research interests.

       This highly flexible program is ideal for language professionals, or for those intending to become language professionals, in a range of possible careers.

       This MA program explores language from a wide range of perspectives. It is designed to develop understanding of key concepts and issues related to applied linguistics and engage students in the theoretical and empirical investigation of real-world situations, contexts and issues in which language plays a crucial role, while also exploring language education globally.

       This program will provide students with insights into applied linguistics and language education from socio-cultural, discourse, bilingual, cognitive, and global perspectives. It will also develop students' capacity to analyze, evaluate and synthesize linguistic data, primary and secondary sources, as well as helping them to design research.

       This program is suitable for anyone with a keen interest in applied linguistics or language education globally, such as people in language-focused professions (e.g. journalism, copywriting and editing, communications and PR), language teachers (including EFL, ESL, ESOL), students of English language, applied linguistics, languages or communication, and those who share an interest in the relations between language, cognition, culture and society.

 

PROGRAM STRUCTURE 

       The program is offered full time over the course of one and a half academic years. You will need to complete 39 credit hours (36 credit hours in taught units and 3 credit hours in the dissertation).

       The program consists of two phases: the teaching phase and the dissertation phase. The teaching phase is divided into three terms, fall, spring and fall which run from September to January, January to June and September to January respectively. The dissertation can only be undertaken upon successful completion of the taught component of the course.

       After completing the subjects prescribed in the first and second terms, the student may choose the section he desires from among three sections, which are literature, theoretical linguistics and applied linguistics, which he will study in the third term.

       The student must study academic writing (ENES06) in the second term compulsory, in addition to choosing four subjects, so that the total of the second term subjects is five subjects.

Objectives

  • Preparing graduate students in the field of theoretical linguistics and expanding their understanding of what the program requires in terms of proficiency in academic writing and an advanced level in grammar, basics of literature, and principles of linguistics and linguistics. in an appropriate learning environment.
  • Developing the ability of students in the field of theoretical linguistics in all its axes and materials. Expanding the student's perceptions and developing his creative and interactive ideas to learn in a deep analytical and critical manner in the field of theoretical linguistics in its various fields, including knowledge of grammar, morphology, phonetics, knowledge of meanings and grammatical theories.
  • Raise the student's research and exploratory competencies in line with the standards of research and dissertations in the field, creativity in research methods, compilation and analysis of information, comprehension of research methods, study and academic writing to conduct research commensurate with research ethics
  • Developing and expanding the horizons of learners and enabling them to use the various teaching aids and educational technology through the proposed materials for the program.

  • Developing the mental ability and creativity in thinking and analysis and developing the academic, linguistic and practical skills of students.
  • The Master's program in Theoretical Linguistics, during its study period, gives its students confidence and wide knowledge in language skills through study activities, workshops, electronic applications, presentation and recitation of applications such as PowerPoint, Prezi, and training in the use of electronic educational platforms such as Google classroom, Google team, Canvas and discussion boards.

Entry Reuirements

  • The grade and academic average of the student in the previous stage of this program is not less than 65% good, provided that this stage is a university qualification (bachelor’s degree) and in the same academic track from a recognized university.
  • Passing an admission test and a personal interview, if the institution deems it necessary to conduct them.
  • Proficiency in the language of instruction and at a level of proficiency suitable for postgraduate studies, research and discussion in this language.
  • Determining the responsibility of the institution and the student in the event of a change in any other requirements for admission related to the program, and the institution believes that it is necessary for the applicant to meet them.
  • The ability of students to absorb according to the available capabilities and their ability to adhere to the study program plan.
  • The applicant must meet the requirements of the program, the University of Tripoli, and the Ministry of Higher Education for postgraduate studies.
  • A comparative study of the capabilities of students applying to the program relative to the capabilities of students previously enrolled in it in terms of academic level and skills, in order to ensure the high academic level of study and program.

Study Plan

The Master in English Language prepares students to qualify for Master in English Language. The student studies several subjects which have been carefully chosen in this major to cover its different aspects.

It comprises 2 Semesters of study, in which the student will study a total of 365 units, which include 15 units of general subjects, and 15 major units, 6 of elective units. In addition to a final project in the student's major.

It provides practical training in using and distinguishing advanced grammar of the English language. The course increases the learner's linguistic proficiency by practicing and applying different types of sentences, phrases, and various grammatical structures.

In this course, the student is introduced to the linguistic approach and the types of linguistic studies of the English language and acquires knowledge of the concepts and detailed explanations of linguistics and linguistic studies. The course will allow the student to become familiar with the problems of organizing, describing, and placing information related to linguistic studies of the English language. By studying the course, the student learns about the various branches of linguistics, such as phonetics, morphology, grammatical theories, semantics, word structure, article structure, meanings of words, and non-verbal behavior, which makes the student distinguish between different topics and challenges related to the use of language in conversation and comprehension (psycholinguistics) and the various social aspects of language. (Sociolinguistics) and historical changes of language. The course raises the learner's linguistic proficiency in the theoretical framework so that he can apply what he has learned about the structure of sentences, audio and written phrases, their coordination forms, and their meanings.

The course aims to conduct a chronological survey of the genres of literature (poetry, drama, fiction) with their many subdivisions. The course examines the time factor in which these works were completed and takes educational, political and social considerations. The course aims to establish and understand research and develop it through critical analysis of the language, ethics, and methods of research. It introduces the principles, ethical challenges, and elements of the research process within quantitative and qualitative methods approaches. Students use these theoretical foundations to begin a critical review of the literature relevant to their field or interest and determine how useful the research findings are in shaping their understanding of the social, local, and global environment. The course provides training in the approximate sequence of activities required to carry out a research project, so that it can be used step-by-step as a guide for conducting the student's own research. The course allows students to think critically, organize their inquiries and reach conclusions based on appropriate evidence and sound arguments when writing their final graduation draft.​

This course aims to introduce the learner to a selection of the best poems written in the English language from the time of the Saxons to the present day. The poems are arranged chronologically linking the poets to similar periods in history. The course begins by examining the nature of poetry and then looks at the raw material of poetry and poetic styles as an introduction to examining the poetic styles of the selected poets.

The course discusses methods for developing language teaching curricula in general and for specific purposes and learner needs, and presents the methodology of communicative language teaching. The course allows the student to learn about the analysis of the needs that the learner wants in learning the language by bringing cases from this field. The course explains to the student the concepts of learning outcomes and defining educational objectives, which will enable him to distinguish between course design and curriculum design by focusing on effective and influential teaching methods. The course introduces the student to the integrated learning approach to content and language and its principles, preparing lessons for it, differentiation, and applying the knowledge approach about language and its components of morphology and phonology.

In this course, the student acquires knowledge of the emergence and development of advanced language grammatical theories with their concepts and details, as well as the transition from grammatical theory based on the laws of grammatical divisions and structures to grammatical theory based on general laws of grammar, and it gives the opportunity to study the development of grammatical theories. The course provides the student with broad-based information that moves him from focusing on describing one language to describing linguistic diversities with grammatical comprehensiveness through practice and application on diverse and advanced grammatical structures.

This course aims to trace the panoramic trajectory of English fiction and the development of the English novel over 250 years by evaluating the works of the most important novelists.

In this course, a student is introduced to the descriptive analysis of the structure and function of sounds in the English language and studies the basic principles of generative phonology theory and various topics related to analytical phonology. The course allows the student to distinguish between the features of different types of consonant sounds and learn about their description and general characteristics, as well as the phonemes of words and the positions of stress in the pronunciation of words and sentences.

In this course, the student learns about the method of academic writing, articles, and research papers, and acquires the concepts, detailed explanations, and steps necessary to write accurate academic articles. The student is trained in a compositional approach that focuses on writing as an academic process in terms of constructing sentences directly, using and distinguishing between different writing styles with diverse goals and strategies. The course enables the student to write, research, and document papers and articles in various academic fields by applying practical activities. Through this course, the student learns about the rhetorical genre, including description, similarity, comparison, classification, cause and effect, and argument. The course enables the student to learn correct steps that lead to writing his thesis in a systematic and clear manner.
