الملخص This study emphasizes the importance of teaching and learning English word-collocations. It intended to explore the extent to which EFL Libyan learners use word collocations in their writings and identify the difficulties encountered by these students. Thirty-five undergraduate students at the Faculty of Education/ Janzur participated in this study and their essays were analyzed to examine the collocations they produced, calculate the frequency of occurrence of each type and identify the basis for their difficulties. A semi- structured interview was also conducted with three English language teachers to seek their ideas and opinions about the source of collocation difficulty encountered by these learners. The results showed that the participants have produced 360 collocations most of them were lexical collocations (66.7%) whereas only (33.3) of these were grammatical collocations. The results also showed that (28%) of these collocations were deemed incorrect which indicates that EFL Libyan learners encounter major difficulties with both lexical and grammatical collocations. The interviewees suggested that students’ limited knowledge of vocabulary, the impact of their first language and the ignorance of rule restrictions are somehow responsible for such difficulty. The results of this study are hoped to lead to substantial improvements in the performance of the leaners’ writing skill and the teachers’ role inside the classroom.
