Discuss the fundamentals of biochemistry such as functional groups, aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbon and the different types of biochemical bonds.

Discuss the acid – base equilibrium:

dissociation of a weak acids, pH and pKa, titration of weak acids, Henderson Hasselbach equation

Discuss how carbohydrates are digested, absorbed, and their clinical correlations.

Discuss how protein is digested, absorbed and its clinical correlations.

Able to draw the structure of amino acids, sugars, purines and pyrimidines, nucleosides and nucleotides, nucleotides derivatives, nucleotide triphosphate, polynucleotides, the structure and function of DNA and RNA

By the end of the course, the student will be able to: − Distinguish between different chemical bonds, functional groups, and aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons. − Understand the interaction of biomolecules with water. − Understand the physiological buffers and the imbalances of blood pH (alkalosis and acidosis). − Describe the structure and physical properties of the building blocks of protein, carbohydrate, nucleotides, and nucleic acids. − Identify the terminology of nucleoside and nucleotide.
