Abstract

Blended elemental Ti-24at.%Al-11at.%Nb and Ti-55at.%Al powders were mechanically alloyed to a B2/bcc and an amorphous phase, respectively. The grain size of the B2/bcc was about 20 nm. Hot isostatic pressing of these powders at 975°C resulted in fully dense compacts, and the Ti-24at.%Al-11at.%Nb transformed to a mixture of B2/bcc and orthorhombic phases while the Ti-55at.%Al fully crystallized into a mixture of the Ti3Al and TiAl phases. The HIP ed compacts had an average grain size of approximately 125 nm for the B2/bcc phase and 260 nm for the orthorhombic phase in Ti-24at%Al-11at%Nb, and 85 nm for the TiAl phase and 220 nm for the Ti3Al phase in the Ti-55at%Al. This work demonstrates that near-nanostructured size grains are preserved in these alloys even after processing at a relatively high temperature
