Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to investigate and examine one of the relatively vague figures that ismentioned in the Quran, known as Khidr. There are considerable debates, among Islamicscholars, with regards to the person of Khidr “The Servant of God”. To identify the correctinterpretation of the Servant of God “Khidr”, this study will attempt to answer four mainquestions:• Is khidr a name?• Does Khidr represent a title, connected, is he still alive?• Is he a messenger or a prophet or simply a Wali, “A friend of God”?• What are the basic lessons of the story of the Servant of God in the Quran?In order to fully understand the Servant of God, this essay, therefore will analyse the reasonsbehind these disagreements among the Islamic and non-Islamic scholars. To achieve that, thisstudy will discuss three different aspects; the first aspect will focus on the Servant of God’s trueidentity, such as his name and his title ‘Khidr’ given him by some Islamic scholars, and thereasons behind that. The second aspect will explore his status, whether he is a prophet, amessenger or a Wali, through the Quranic text and the historical perspective. Lastly, the essaywill discuss the lessons that can be learnt from the story of the prophet Moses and the Servant ofGod, such as the value of patience and knowledge.
