Abstract

Libya is an Arab country located in North Africa. The country’s official language is Arabic. The majority of the Libyan population is Muslim. Suicide is a significant public health concern in Libya. The prevalence of suicidal behavior in Libya is difficult to quantify due to a lack of comprehensive data and research on the subject. While suicide prevention is receiving increased attention in many developed countries, it remains largely ignored in low- and middle-income countries. To date, very little is known about the current situation of suicide and its effects on psychological help-seeking attitudes in Libya. This chapter provides information on what is known about suicidal behavior in Libya. There is an urgent need for more research on this topic and to design and implement educational programs and awareness campaigns on suicide and mental health among different age groups in the country. Such interventions may increase knowledge, reduce stigma, and change attitudes to seeking psychological help, thus improving the use of mental health services and preventing suicide in Libyan society.
