Abstract

The utilization of sucrose and glucose by Clostridium beijerinckii was investigated. Glucose was used preferentially to sucrose, when both substrates were present in the medium. Glucose inhibits completely sucrose metabolism when the cells had been adapted to glucose, indicating that sucrose metabolism is subject to regulation by glucose. When the cells were pregrown on sucrose and then exposed to sucrose and glucose, they metabolised both sugars initially at similar rates, implying that glucose regulatory effect on sucrose is directed to the synthesis of transport system rather than the metabolic activity.
