Abstract This thesis examines the maritime accidents and the basic principles to protect ships and properties from loss. The study mainly focuses on the main event that can cause serious impacts on the ships, persons and goods and that is maritime collision. This thesis is divided into an introductory chapter which outlines the concept of maritime collision, and two main chapters, the first chapter studies the scope of liability in maritime collision and the second chapter examines the legal effects resulting from the collision. The study concludes that the majority of national legislations adoptedthe Brussels International Convention (1910) for the Unification of Certain Rules of Law Related to Collision between Vessels, and the reason for that adoption is that theConvention representedan international effort towards developing standards for best practices regarding the maritime collision, and thus the solutions embraced by the conventionare more effective than the rules that can beestablishedby the national legislature.
