This study aims to present a future vision for achieving sustainable agricultural development in Libya, and this is done by focusing on determining the required strategy in the short, medium and long terms, within a national strategy aimed at making the agricultural sector a source of the diversification of the national economy. Agricultural production in Libya faces many challenges that have negatively affected the development of sustainable agricultural development, as there have been many developments on the natural and human aspects, foremost of which are decreasing and fluctuating rainfall, which led to an increase in desertification and deterioration of soil fertility. In addition to population expansion, an increase of migration to major cities. All these factors together necessitate shedding light on these challenges, knowing and analysing their causes and then developing appropriate solutions to them to achieve sustainable agricultural development. In this study, the weaknesses, strengths, challenges and opportunities of the agricultural sector were analysed. The study concluded that there is an urgent need to develop a progressive agricultural sector that responds to different changes, capable of sustainable rapid growth and contributes to achieving food security and improving farmers' incomes. That can be achieved by using available agricultural resources in a safe and sustainable way, so that it preserves lands from degradation and desertification, uses renewable energies and moves towards investment and increase the private sector's contribution. The research also indicates the importance of having a production base in the Libyan economy that depends on the productive sectors such as agriculture and food industries. It also recommends a package of reform policies in the agricultural production structure, such as marketing policies, price and optimal crop composition to reduce the random consumption of water, in addition to activating extension agricultural and conducting a comprehensive survey at the national level to study the available agricultural potentials, and pay attention to agricultural industrialization to increase its contribution to the total product by searching for investment opportunities.
