Abstract

Preeclampsia (PE) is a syndrome unique to pregnancy defined by hypertension and proteinuria after 20 weeks of gestation and is a significant contributor to maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality if not diagnosed early. This disease affects liver function parameters. To observe the alteration of hepatic enzymes in the preeclamptic woman and to compare the results with the values obtained in the normal pregnant woman. This study was conducted from May to July 2023 on 104 pregnant women admitted to Obs/Gyn units of University Hospital Tripoli and Al-Jala Hospital. Cases were divided into two groups: the preeclampsia group (52 cases) and the non-preeclampsia group (52 normal pregnant women). Subjects in both groups were in the third trimester of pregnancy with blood pressure between (90/50mmHg to 200/110mmHg) and age groups of 17-47 years. The data, including age, period of gestation, blood pressure, pregnancy type (single or multiple), family history, and medical complications of all subjects, were recorded. Liver function parameters AST, ALT, and ALP were estimated. Statistical analysis was conducted using IBM SPSS 28. Quantitative data were presented as mean ± standard deviation, while qualitative data were presented as frequency and percentage. P ≤ 0.05 was considered statistically significant. The mean age of the cases was 34.9±5.8, and that of controls was 32.2±5.9 (p = 0.048). The mean value of gestational age in cases was 36±3.9, and in controls, it was 36.5±4.2 (p = 0.228). The mean systolic BP in the cases was 147.1±17, and in controls, it was 109.0±9.3 (p < 0.001); and the mean diastolic BP in cases was 95.4±8.9, and in controls, it was 70±8.4 (p < 0.001). The mean value of AST in cases was 30.9±23.7, while in the controls it was 22.2±11.6 (p < 0.001). Mean serum ALT in the cases was 21.6±19, and in controls it was 12.8±6.0 (p < 0.001). The mean ALP level in the cases was 161.4±97.8, and in controls, it was 144.9±67.9 (p = 0.349). Raised levels of liver enzymes AST and ALT were found in preeclampsia cases.
