Abstract

This study investigates the role of oral presentations in developing Libyan EFL undergraduate students' speaking skill. It identifies the attitudes of both teachers and students towards adopting this technique. A close-ended questionnaire was distributed to 71 Libyan undergraduate students from Tripoli University. Semi-structured interviews were also conducted with six teachers from the same university. The findings indicated that oral presentation activities have a beneficial effect on developing students' speaking skill. The results indicated that the majority of participants were in favor of employing oral presentation activities. Moreover, the findings indicated that using oral presentations helped not only in building students’ self-confidence, but also in promoting their interaction skills. Besides, the findings emphasized the existence of some challenges, such as stress, fear, shyness, and anxiety, which were reported by the interviewed teachers. Nevertheless, Libyan EFL university teachers are highly recommended to start utilizing oral presentations in teaching speaking.
