Abstract
This study investigates the challenges encountered by Libyan EFL postgraduate students in preparing their research proposals and suggests procedures that can be followed to overcome these challenges. The quantitative data was collected through a questionnaire by sixty-four postgraduate students, and the qualitative data was collected through semi-structured interviews with nine students and five supervisors. The findings indicated that students encountered various challenges in preparing their research proposals. Some of these challenges were related to students, others were related to the supervisors and institutions. The findings also indicated that students adopted some procedures to overcome them, such as exchanging feedback and discussions with their peers and reading articles. Additionally, some procedures were recommended to assist students in overcoming these challenges to facilitate the process.
