Abstract

The current study aims to investigate the difficulties that the 1st and 2nd semester students of English Department face during speaking English, and to find out reasons behind difficulties that the 1st and 2nd semester student of English Department face during speaking English. In order to achieve the objectives, the quantitative approach is used by applying closed-ended questionnaire to 30 students English Department. The frequency and the percentage are used to analyze the data. The main findings of this study reveal that first and second semester students of the English Department face several difficulties when it comes to speaking English. The students feel nervous, lack confidence, hesitate, and experience anxiety when speaking in English. Additionally, many students fear criticism, making mistakes, and struggle with word choice, fluency, and grammar. The results also indicate that students have limited speaking opportunities, face language barriers, and lack motivation and proper English environment. The traditional teaching methods, teacher- centered approach, and linguistic deficiencies contribute to these difficulties.
