Abstract

Abstract The main aim of this study is to present and analyse fronting in both Arabic and English languages. It provides a description of the fronting phenomenon as a syntactic process and concentrates on the effect of fronting on meaning. Also, it highlights most of the functional effects of fronting in Arabic and English. The second aim of this study is to show the areas of similarities and differences of fronting in both Arabic and English. This study represents an adequate description of fronting in Arabic and English. It investigates the most essential issues about fronting such as : the definition of fronting, types of fronting and the purposes of fronting. The analysis will take a step forward and provide a comparison of fronting phenomenon by concentrating on the most similar and different sides of fronting in Arabic and English. It is observed that fronting in Arabic and English is considered as a syntactic phenomenon which can affect the meaning as well as the syntactic structure of the sentence. There are some similarities and differences of fronting in both languages which appear clearly in the comparative part of this study. In this study we can find that fronting as a linguistic phenomenon is used to serve many semantic and syntactic purposes according to the mood of the language user. Also we can notice that fronting in both languages may be similar or different in some aspects according to language specific rules and constraints of each language. The difference is confined to some functional and syntactic characteristics of each language.
