Abstract

Abstract This study is an attempt to describe and analyze English adjectives and how they look like in order to help the learner to distinguish between them, moreover, to illustrate that adjectives are different from adverbs and nouns, and also it shows how adjectives can be used as (participles, multiword lexemes, comparative and superlative, etc). This study also provides a deta iled description of syntactic and semantic functions of English adjectives. It explains how English adjectives can occupy different positions and functions in a sentence structure. This study also aims to highlight the areas of difficulties that Libyan learners face while learning English adjectives due to many factors, such as, first language interference, which has the major influence on Libyan learners. In addition, it suggests ways to help learners understand and use English adjectives. A test divided into two parts, is designed to collect the required data. The participants are Libyan EFL learners at Tripoli University, Faculty of Languages, English Department, fall (2015-2016). The total number of participants is 50 students, aged between 19 and 25. The findings of the test indicate that; the learners‟ knowledge about using English adjectives is influenced by their first language.
