Abstract

Abstract The purpose of this study is to investigate Libyan EFL University students’ attitudes towards using role-play and to enhance their awareness about the effectiveness of using it as a communication-oriented teaching technique. The participants were fifty undergraduate students from the English department at Janzour Faculty of Education. Six teachers who taught the same students participated in this study as well. Two sampling techniques were applied to select the sample: convenience sampling and snowball sampling. This investigation employed a combined approach of quantitative (questionnaire) and qualitative (semi-structured interviews) research methods for data collection. The quantitative figures were analysed by Excel Microsoft Program and presented on bar charts. The content analysis was applied for analyzing the qualitative data through coding and categorising the emerging themes. The results revealed that teachers and students hold favourable attitudes towards using role-play.
