Libyan TV-Based Distance Education During COVID-19 Pandemic: Challenges and Suggestions for Improvement

As soon as COVID-19 was confirmed a pandemic, schools and universities around the world were forced to shift to distance learning to maintain social distancing. Likewise, the Libyan Ministry of Education aimed at mitigating the impact of COVID-19 on learners’ educational progress and found alternatives to in-person lessons through recording and broadcasting lessons on television on Libyan TV channels. Current literature review indicates the scarcity of literature on television-based distance education during a pandemic in the Libyan context. Thus, the present study addressed this shortcoming by investigating the opinions of the Libyan educational television team’s perspectives. The design of the study was exploratory mixed methods as we gathered both qualitative and quantitative data to get accurate and detailed picture of the managers’ and teachers’ views. The context of the study is the Libyan General Center for Training and Education Development. The participants were 6 managers and 27 teachers. Data were collected through observations, focus group discussion, and questionnaires. The results showed that the participants encountered administrative, personal, educational, and technical and logistical challenges. The participants suggestions as ways of conquering those challenges included providing the technical support and the required equipments, organizing the schedule of live broadcasts in terms of lesson content, time, and grade level, providing training courses for teachers on all the programs that are used in distance education, along with other suggestions. We expect that our findings would provide the educational TV managers and teachers with ideas for improvement and encourage researchers to conduct further and more rigorous testing on educational TV.

Malaria in Illegal Immigrants in Southern Libya

Background: Libya has been malaria-free since 1973. The risk of malaria re-introduction to Libya is increasing because of the increase in imported malaria cases due to immigration to Libya from countries where malaria is endemic. Cases are mainly due to P. falciparum and Sub-Saharan Africa is the most common origin. This study was conducted to investigate the prevalence of malaria positive cases among illegal immigrants in the southern region of Libya. Methods: A prospective, observational, multi-center study was conducted. Three hundred and three illegal immigrants from 12 different countries were included. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to detect the presence of serum malaria antibodies. Results: A total of 303 immigrants were included in the study with mean age of 25.78±5.92 years. Of them, 195 tested positive for malaria antibodies. Two hundred and sixty nine of the participants came from Brak Al-Shati, 16 from Sebha and 18 from Bergan centers, with 175, 15 and 5 positive cases, respectively. Most of the positive cases (172) arrived in Libya within 1-10 months. The highest number of positive cases (70) came from Ghana followed by (40) from Niger and (39) from Bangladesh. Conclusions: Illegal immigration is a major malaria re-introduction route. The issue of illegal immigration have to be treated urgently to stop the huge influx of illegal immigrants and increase the surveillance activities of infectious diseases in order to keep Libyan territories as a malaria-free lands. Key words: Illegal immigration, Malaria, Libya.

Serological study on the prevalence of malaria in samples from foreign workers in Tripoli, Libya

This study was primarily conducted to investigate the prevalence of imported malaria in a sample of foreign workers (n-1038) in Tripoli during the period from May 2006 to June 2007. A comprehensive review of malaria epidemiology in Libya in the last two decades was also given. All samples were tested serologically using Malaria Rapid Diagnostic test and then examined using blood film technique. Results showed that only 10 samples (1%) were tested positive for both malaria rapid diagnostic test and blood film. Nine of those infected were identified as Plasmodium falciparum and one as Plasmodium vivax. This study confirms that the prevalence of malaria in legal foreign workers is low and the risk of re-introducing or transmitting malaria in the northern areas of the country is remote. It also gives no good reason for including malaria test among those requested for issuing health certificates to foreign workers. The use of malaria Rapid Diagnostic test for malaria detection in this study was proved to be practical and reliable. Although, the situation of imported malaria in Libya imposes no immediate threat to re-emerging of malaria in the country however, continuous surveillance and monitoring particularly to the southern regions and populations have to be taken in a great consideration. An updated new map of malaria vectors distribution in Libya is urgently needed to be able to outline areas of high risk of malaria transmission.

Determination of Lead and Cadmium Concentration in Different Samples of Tea and Coffee Circulating in the Libyan Market

The study focused on determining the levels of lead and cadmium in some samples of the best-selling and popular tea and coffee among people in Tripoli city-Libya during the years 2018-2019. Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) has been used to determine the concentrate of cadmium and lead ions in different 17 tea samples, and 11 coffee samples. The mean values of cadmium and lead in (mg/kg) in tea samples as follows: The highest value for cadmium was found in Libton tea sample 0.260 ? 0.017, while the lowest value was found in Alkoozi red tea and Alfrdous tea samples 0.037 ? 0.006, with the overall mean was 0.119 ? 0.054. The highest value for lead was found in Alkoozi green tea sample 2.153 ? 0.012, while the lowest value was found in Alzahra tea sample 0.187 ? 0.002, with the overall mean was 1.118 ? 0.612. The results show that there are no significant differences in the values of lead in all coffee samples, which ranged from 1.23 to 1.62 mg/kg with the overall mean was 1.277 ? 0.358, except Sheikh Hbahanbelend coffee sample 0.271? 0.002 mg/kg. While the cadmium concentration in coffee samples ranged from 0.022 to 0.064 mg/kg, with the mean value 0.0514?0.0012. From these results can be noticed that coffee samples have about 11 times higher concentration of cadmium than tea, whereas the concentration of lead in tea is about 22 times higher than that in coffee samples.

Iron Oxide Nanoparticles Assisted Arsenic, Mercury, And Cadmium Removal From Aqueous Solution

– Iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) can play a significant role in the removal of heavy metal from contaminated solution .Aresnite ,As(III) highly toxic, mobile and predominant species in arsenic contaminated water IONPs have been synthesized, characterized and tested for the removal of As(III) from arsenic contaminated water. In this work , we synthesized IONPs using a chemical method involving dispersion of Fe3+ ions through polymer molecules of poly vinyl alcohol (PVA) in aqueous medium X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed the formation of a single phase rhomobohrdral crystal structure, the size of nanoparticles was 50-100 nm. Transmission electron microscopic images corborate the result of IONPs (50-100 nm) . The adsorption of As(III),Hg(II) and Cd(II) On (IONPs) was studied using four parameters contact time, concentration, dose of IONPs and pH Adsorption equilibrium was achieved in 100 min and maximum removal of As(III) was obtained at pH (6-6.5) . The isotherm analysis indicated that the adsorption data better filted to the Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacities were 101.2, 73.10 and 60.05 mg g_1 for As(III), Hg(II) and Cd(II), respectively.
