Overview

This course provides students with knowledge of the basic principles of geotechnical site investigation, to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the geotechnical site characterization process, including desk study, observation methods, conventional drilling and sampling, techniques, and a wide range of geotechnical and geophysical test methods.

The student develops an understanding of the capabilities and limitations of these tools, and is able to analyze, post-process and interpret data and Meaningful description of subsurface terrestrial material at a variety of locations. Students should be able to plan an investigation below the surface.

Intended learning outcomes

Outcomes of the course:

1. Work efficiently in problem-solving teams.

2. Conducting a comprehensive desk study as a first step in the subsurface exploration program.

3. Based on the result of the desk study, plan a focused reconnaissance and visual inspection of the site for collection

Required information leading to initial decision and detailed subsurface investigations.

4. Develop a complete subsurface exploration program including the number and depth of wells for a variety of sites Understanding the effectiveness and limitations of various sites investigation tools.

6. Determine the geotechnical and geophysical exploration tools at the site and the appropriate methods for the site.

7. Based on the type of ground material, select the most suitable soil and rock sampler.

8. Based on the subsurface exploration of the site, develop a comprehensive site-specific profile to support the foundation analysis and

design.

9. Writing a high quality, clear and concise geotechnical report.
