Overview

The course aims to teach the student how to make accurate measurements using some measuring tools such as Vernier calipers, micrometer and spherometer, as well as how to determine some physical quantities' values practically. It also helps the student to understand some of the fundamental ideas that were studied in the courses of (Introduction to Mechanics, Heat and Properties of Matter). In addition, teaches the student how to write reports on laboratory experiments, represent them graphically and compare the laboratory obtained results with real values.

Intended learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student should be able to:

1. Applies safety instructions in the laboratory to use tools and operate devices correctly.

2. Uses Vernier caliper, micrometer and spherometer to perform measurements and determine the error percentage.

3. Determines some of physical quantities in practice such as gravitational acceleration constant, coefficient of friction, Young's modulus, heat capacity and heat conductivity of several materials, coefficient of surface tension and viscosity of some liquids.

4. Writes scientific reports correctly on practical experiments.

5. Performs some experiments theoretically through the computers using some modern simulation programs.

6. Acquires the skills of teamwork and participation in scientific groups.

7. Give oral presentations to discuss the results of practical experiments.
