Abstract

The parasites of sheep investigation and research performed in Libya have been reviewed through study of available literature. Considerable works mainly on nature of infestation and different species of sheep parasites (protozoa, helminths and arthropods have been done). A total of 65 species of parasites have so far been record from sheep in Libyan. Many of these species of parasites are zoonotic importance. The studies conducted on parasitism of sheep in Libya presented that sheep was most animal infected with hydatid cysts with prevalence rate reach up to 37,9%, the liver was the predominant infected site with prevalence values of 86%. The prevalence of gastrointestinal nematodes was ranged between 75.5-88.9%, Sarcocystis 86.1%, cestodes was 30.7% and Eimeria species was 74%. The overall prevalence of ectoparasites was 43%. Different species of ticks, mites, lice and fleas were found on sheep. The prevalence rate of Oestrus ovis reached up to 75% and three larval stages were seen with highest between June and September. Serological studies also revealed that prevalence of toxoplasmosis was 40.7% and for Babesia was 34.5%, 29%, 27% and 17% in spring, summer, winter and autumn respectively.
