The agricultural sector is considered one of the most important non-extractive productive economic sectors in Libya in terms of available agricultural resources and job opportunities that this sector can provide, especially in rural areas, which include about 21.0% of the total population, in addition to being the main source of providing food, and the main base in achieving food security. This paper aims to shed light on the resource potential of Libyan agriculture, its productive reality, besides the various agricultural activities that comprise it during the period 2000-2017. The study found that the average per capita share of the total cultivated land ranged from 0.4 hectares in 2005 to about 0.21 hectares in 2017. The irrigated area was estimated to be about 450 thousand hectares in 2000, and reached to 600 thousand hectares in 2010, then decreased sharply to 320 thousand hectares in 2017. With respect to the value of agricultural product, it was about 2498.5 Libyan dinars in 2010 then declined to 602.0 million Libyan dinars in 2017, and reached about 1025.5 million Libyan dinars in 2020, these fluctuations due to the deterioration of production of most crops and agricultural products. The research also showed that the contribution of the agricultural sector to the value of the output of the non-oil economic sectors in terms of economic efficiency amounted to (1.55, 0.84, 0.77) during the years (2000, 2010, 2020) respectively. Finally, the research determined the most important difficulties facing agricultural production in Libya and suggested ways to promote and develop this agricultural sector. Key words: agricultural resources, agricultural production in Libya, the efficiency of the performance of the agricultural sector
