Association between chronic periodontitis and arterial hypertension in Libyan patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus: A single-center study

Abstract

Background: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disease characterized by impaired regulation of blood glucose levels due to defects in insulin secretion, action, or both. HbA1c measures glycemic control. High HbA1c and type 2diabetes mellitus (T2DM) worsen with chronic periodontitis. Most adults lose teeth from chronic periodontitis. Chronic periodontitis exhibits changeable risk factors with cardiovascular disease, DM, and arterial hypertension Aim: The present study was designed to evaluate the relationship between chronic periodontitis and arterial hypertension in Libyan T2DM patients. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study involved 440 Libyan T2DM patients, collecting demographic and medical data, including medical history, dental history, age, gender, and HbA1c levels. Logistic regression analysis was conducted using SPSS 26 to assess the relationship between chronic periodontitis and arterial hypertension with independent variables like age, gender, HbA1c, and glycemic control in T2DM patients. Results: A study of 440 Libyan T2DM patients found that 70.9% had chronic periodontitis and 24.6% had arterial hypertension. The 50-64 age group had the highest rates, with 13.7% glycaemic-controlled. and 42.6% uncontrolled cases. Among them, 10.1% of glycemic-controlled and 40.7% of uncontrolled cases had arterial hypertension. The association between chronic periodontitis and hypertension was significant, especially in females with uncontrolled glycemic levels (31.48%). It was statistically significant (p <0.001). Conclusion: Chronic periodontitis and arterial hypertension correlate in Libyan T2DM patients. Chronic Periodontitis and high arterial blood pressure are much more common with high HbA1c levels.
