The objectives of this study are to investigate the role of small group discussion in teaching speaking skill, and investigate the effects of using small group discussion in improving the speaking skill among third year students at Shams Al-maarifa secondary school. This study used quantitative quasi-experimental approach. Pre-test and post-test were used to collect the data. The participants of this study were 20 third year students at Shams Al-maarifa secondary school. After collecting the data from the tests, the percentage, the Mean, and the Standard Deviation were used to analyze the data. The result showed there was significant effect of small group discussion toward speaking skill of third year students at Shams Al-maarifa secondary school. The significant effect can be seen among score of mean, in pretest of experimental class was 7.2 after getting treatment the score increased to 12.5. Moreover, it is also seen from the difference score of speaking at experimental class with 53 points.
