Overview

This course:

  • Identify the concepts of community medicine, epidemiology, health, and disease. Distinguish between the different determinants of health and disease.
  • Define the different epidemiologic approaches to measure the occurrence of disease in communities and compare between different epidemiological study designs, differentiate between association and causation.
  • Recognize types of epidemics and the main steps of epidemic investigations and know types, uses of screening tests and أ4 surveillance.
  • Determine the sources of health information and appropriate data collection and bio-statistical methods; and describe the أ5 demographic pattern of the country.
  • Identify the research process, research ethics, and research proposal principles and recognize IMRaD format in writing scientific research.
  • Describe the health care delivery system and the principles of health care management; define elements of health service quality and patient safety.

Intended learning outcomes

By the end of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Recognize the development of community medicine and appreciate the significance of community. medicine in promotive, preventive, curative, and rehabilitative health interventions.
  • Explain the basic principles of epidemiology, including health and disease determinants, natural history, levels of prevention, dynamics of disease transmission, epidemiological measurements, epidemiological studies, screening, causation, and surveillance.
  • Acquire knowledge and skills of basic principles of biostatistics and health information systems and how to apply them in the medical field for problem solving and decision - making.
  • Discuss the concepts, process of research and acquire skills to carry out the scientific research tacking into account the ethical considerations.
  • Demonstrate understanding of concepts, elements of health care management and the health care system in Libya, including health care quality and patient safety.
