The
course aims to develop students' academic reading strategies as well as their
cultural awareness. This is because they need to develop their reading skills
to succeed in an academic setting.
This
course consists of thought-provoking readings that are based on a variety of
authentic sources and cover a range of topics. Stimulating exercises and group
activities promote reading proficiency, critical thinking, and vocabulary
acquisition.
Intended learning outcomes
By the end of this course students should be able to:
1. Preview and predict: students preview key elements of a text to determine what they already know about a text. Then predict what they will learn.
2. Preview: students preview comprehension questions to help them predict what they will read about and pay Attention to important ideas and details as they read.
3. Scan: they use signals and symbols to help them scan for information in a text.
4. Use context clues: students use clues to understand unknown vocabulary.
5. Identify the main idea and supporting details: students find the main ideas in a text and discriminate between main ideas and supporting details.
6. Summarize: they use the main idea and supporting details to help them write a short version of a text.
7. Skim: students move their eyes quickly down a page, not reading every word, in order to get an idea of what the text is about.
8. Identify patterns of organization: they recognize patterns to help them understand and remember what they read
Teaching and learning methods
The lecturer uses a variety of teaching methods. For example, the teacher gives classroom discussions, the use of collaborative learning by working in groups. The lecturer tries to make the class learner-centred by the use of different activities and tasks.
Methods of assessments
Midterm 40 marks.
Final exam: 60 marks.
