Overview

Historical background, mining terminology, prospection and exploration, drilling and drills, rock blasting, haulage and hosting, rock mechanics and supporting, shaft sinking, mine organization, drainage, ventilation and safety in mines, processing and marketing. 

Intended learning outcomes

Course Objectives & Outcomes:

By the end of the 12th week......., the student should be able to:

• Define the terms related to mines and the mining industry.

• The ability to discuss the results of physical and mechanical tests for rocks and to identify the types of drilling rigs, explosives and tunneling supporting methods.

The student becomes skilled in determining the optimal method for extracting ores, methods of concentration and their various treatments, identifying dangerous and toxic gases in mines, methods of mines ventilating, and learning about safety in mines.

Methods of assessments

Grading

The evaluation strategy for the student in this course consists of four elements:

• The first exam (written), of 20 marks.

• The second exam (written), of 20 marks.

• A report that is presented and discussed, out of 10 marks.

• Final exam (written), out of 50 marks.
