Overview

The main objective of this course (English I) is to encourage the leaners to acquire the English language skills they need to pursue their specialized courses in different Departments of the Faculty. In order to achieve this purpose, emphasis should be relied upon the formal grammar of the language, reading and writing activities in the classroom and listening comprehension and note-taking practice in the language laboratory. Undoubtedly, this can help the students to express themselves freely while dealing with technical terminology, vocabulary items and structures related to their subject areas. The overall program is a complimentary and prerequisite course for all Engineering Departments (Four hours per week). It covers the following:-

Intensive Reading of different passages containing materials the students need to follow their departmental courses (vocabulary exercises, comprehension questions, contextual references, affixation, etc.).

•Description of the laboratory experiments.

Scientific vocabulary including the use of dictionary, punctuation, word-order, spelling, word- formation, etc.

•The study of English verb tenses, active forms and passive constructions.

The study of English nouns (kinds, functions, derivation) pronouns, adjectives, articles, adverbial phrases and so forth.

•Summary writing.

Intended learning outcomes

A. Knowledge & Understanding A.1 Know the correct reading methods and proper pronunciation. A.2 Understand the questions and know the ways to answer. A.3 Knowledge of the structure and placement of verbs in sentences for different tenses. A.4 Know the ways to comprehend and understand what is read. Mental skills Helping the student to acquire appropriate skills in: B.1 Linking the topic of the lesson and reality and comparing them. B.2 Formulates simple sentences that are correct in terms of structure and meaning. B.3 Compare sentences according to different tenses. B.4 Derive the main ideas and other ideas supporting them. Practical & Professional Skills C.1 Use grammar in a scientific-linguistic style in sentences that have simple grammatical structures. C.2 Proper and clear expression of his thoughts verbally and in writing. C.3 Develop linguistic research skills and apply them scientifically. C.4 The student should use what he has learned in dialogue and discussion according to language and scientific methods. Generic and transferable skills D.1 Work in a team and overcome the confusion factor. D.2 The ability to use the dictionary (English – English) to search for the meanings of vocabulary. D.3 Ability to communicate in written and oral English inside and outside the classroom.

Teaching and learning methods

Lectures Open the door for discussion among students. Focus on asking questions and involving students in answering them.
